Mice in cartoons, preferably features like this one, tend to fall into the category I would call "tiny humans with tails", simply because of the way they tend to view their world in a very civilized manner to that of humans through wardrobe, everyday items and what-not. Disney of course had elevated it to such an extent in Great Mouse Detective, you forget these guys are inhabiting a world that otherwise is also shared by those bigger species beyond their view. Though it does variate over time.

Gus's introduction in Cinderella always fascinated me a little simply because he starts out as a stray mouse trapped in a cage, and it's only after Cinderella frees him (with a little help from Jaq), gives him clothes and a name, that he's given a personality, far from being just a blank slate before (of course his IQ hasn't changed).

Though not mentioned here, the short film, "Ben & Me" aught to get an honorable mention if only for much a similar fashion of there being a parallel world of mice cohabiting among humans. It's main protagonist, Amos, also has an interesting background of being among a family of mice in a church who don't mind praising a human deity (or one they could see as their own too). I always loved the piece of animation at the start of him getting out of bed to try to find a job in the cold world outside whilst getting dress. The little detail of him having to thread his tail through his pants always amused me for some reason, I guess I always wondered how an animal would have to go about that every day of their lives.

The notion of "church mice" (let alone mice living in a church) has been thrown about for centuries since I've heard the term used elsewhere a bit. Of course the 1986's An American Tail would break that notion with it's focused family being Jewish from the start and it's titular young Fievel Mousekewitz receiving a hat from his papa as a Hanukkah gift. One thing about An American Tail and in similar features if the sort of "used universe" aesthetic employed with the way mice have to make due with the waste of humans to build their own world from.

I love Glen Keane's work here. He somehow managed to stay at home taking care of his family while working on what appears to practically be all the rough drawings for Ratigan, which is something you don't really see in later characters he supervised.
Also, anyone heard of Sherlock Hound? Its bears a similar concept in adapting Sherlock but as anthropomorphic dogs. Some of it was actually directed by Miyazaki during his earlier years.

Ah, so much fun. Shout out to fellow fans of "Tintin"! I was also twitching with anxiety when I heard they'd be using motion-capture for that movie (cough cough "Polar Express") but Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg paid homage to Herge's world well. And I think Spielberg pulled a lot of his classic Indiana Jones adventure into it.
