I've been following the show since season 2, and its probably because I become more interested in the story after the curse was lifted (I feel the 1st season is too grounded). Also with the inclusion of Frozen into OUAT after the "mean green things" of season 3, I feel like this is literary what the show needs most. The minute when last season finale ends, its the most literal fan service that I have seen on television. Because i think the creators really took all the necessary feedback, and to ensure that Frozen will maintain more success with the show and Disney itself.

First episode review in two words: Very. Frozen. From the 1st scene of the storm to the split screen of Emma and Regina at the near end is a purely nod to Frozen. Although I was quite disappointed at how Grand Pabbie is looking with CG. The sorcerer's hat looks breathtaking, and with Regina's resolve in finding the storybook author made me wanting for more!!

I really enjoyed it, although there were a few things that I didn't like. The first one is kind of nitpicking, I know, but to me Elizabeth Lail's voice just doesn't sound anything like Anna. I liked her performance and Georgina Haig's performance as well, but I felt like the qualities that Anna's voice had in the movie weren't really there in the performance. I understand that it's not going to sound 100% like the movie version, but it just felt kind of off for me. Aside from her voice though, I thought she did a nice job bringing Anna to life. Seeing the version of Grand Pabbie that they had was a little jarring. My favorite moment was when Belle and Rumpelstiltskin had their dance. Overall, though I thought it was good.

Interesting point about saving the author of the book until the final season. That would make sense! Hmm.

At first I was a bit worried about Frozen being included in the show but I am actually very interested now that I've seen this episode, especially since we might find out about the origin of Elsa's powers and I'm not 100% sure but I heard that elements from the original fairy tale were going to be included including the Snow Queen herself. And it is interesting that we're going to be focusing on the author of the book, I always assumed that it just came about through magic or something. Now that they mention that there is an author I am very excited to see who it is!

The only problem I have is how they tried to replicate Frozen to an exact copy. Take the dance scene between Rumbelle (which gave me the feels, by the way). Their costumes weren't an exact copy of Beast and Belle's costumes, but definitely a nod towards them and easily recognizable. While with Anna, Elsa and Kristoff's outfits as well as some of the sets they tried to copy a little too much. I guess I just wanted them to add some of that "Fairy tale couture" that they mentioned in a behind the scenes segment about the costumes, where they add a slight modern touch to the costumes we all know and love.

Don't kill me, fellow fans, but...oh help. How to put this? I love Frozen. I love Once Upon A Time. This should have been a match made in heaven.

But oh boy, those Arendelle scenes were just excruciating, for me. It felt almost like expensive fanfiction or something. I'm not saying the actors were poor in any way - but personally, I thought the whole plot just felt forced and out of place in the context of the episode? Things like them going to visit the trolls in case Grandpabbie could 'explain Mother's diary' - is it just me, or is that the vaguest motivation since the dawn of time? Every situation rang so false, it was downright awkward at times. I was looking forward to the Frozen elements so much, but this...argh. This isn't my cup of tea.

That being said, I adored the rest of the episode. So proud of Robin for his little speech about vows and being true to his moral code; what an inspiration. My heart broke for Regina, though - and I totally agree, the writers really seem to have done a sudden 180 with her? We'll see how it plays out. I do love me some Evil Regina, I have to admit.

Also, can I just say, I absolutely loved this recap! Just the right balance of analysis and humour (I was laughing out loud at Snapchat-Arendelle) and you seem to have a real love for the show. I really look forward to reading one of these next week!
