It’s evident everywhere, from the cobblestone streets, to the advertisement designs on the boxes, to even the accents. Corpse Bride also had a Victorian setting, but this film seems to present it in a more balanced way. The Victorian people are not all gloomy priss-pants, but then they aren’t all oddballs either. This film inspires me in how it’s able to use a historical period without falling into a pigeonhole and make it into a social commentary film, i.e. “too serious”. And by extension, the entire film can be seen as breaking against the idea that stop-motion is only for horror films. It’s taking ambitious ideas and running with them.

Usually something I wouldn’t otherwise see. Wrath of the Titans. Stuff like that. Movies that otherwise don’t interest me.

Paranorman was one of these. I went to see it on a Sunday afternoon just for the sake of killing some time after church. It was a very worthwhile afternoon. Laika won me over. I’ve been looking forward to their next project ever since, and it looks like it may be just as good.

We shall see!
