I saw it today, it was OK.
The good things were the animation (as always), the main characters, and the story. Now the bad things are the bad guys, the execution of the story and some parts were not that suitable for kids. It’s supposed to be a cute film, but there is some darkness to it, which is fine, but not THAT bizarre. This movie could have used more jokes, ’cause most of them really work. But, the problems are kinda major ones. I say rent it or watch it online, and kids may like it, but for me, it’s alright.

I’m really looking forward to this movie. I can’t say I’m STOKED, but I think to at least some degree stop motion done as well as LAIKA has proven to do is worth at the least a watch in theaters. As an animator, I have to say the first thing I do when I go to an animated movie is appreciate (and dissect) the movement, acting and visual artistry of a project. I wish I could say I cared more about the story, but for some reason, as long as it works well enough, I don’t tend to care too much. That being said, an amazing story definitely creates a LASTING film that you can go back and appreciate over and over.

Either way, I have no doubt this movie will at least feed my inner animator and artist.

I am actually excited to see it. The unique visual style may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I hope that the movie does better than people are expecting it to.

Well I wasn’t surprised I am starting to have doubts about this movie too, and the bad reviews make a lot of sense

In reply to Morgan Stradling. Agreed, the atmosphere is just beautiful and had a lot of work into it, but the story and characters seem just not that good like Coraline or Paranorman

Or it could just teach them to make better movies. I doubt that The Botxtrolls was so expensive that it would shut the studio down if it became a flop.

If this fails at the box-office, all this will do is show Laika that audiences aren’t into movies like “The Boxtrolls”, and the studio will adjust. And you shouldn’t go see a movie for the sole purpose of supporting a studio, especially if that means you’re going to go see a movie that you don’t really want to see.

In reply to Trev. we support them because a LACK of support for one movie might be enough to crash a studio that has hit the ball out of the park everytime. skip this one and we might not get our next "coralline"

In reply to Trev. Mainly because in an animated mainstream feature length world where everything is CGI, stop motion is different. It's very slowly dragging other mediums to the forefront. And less than stellar offerings don't stop people from supporting other studios, animated or not.

I’m actually not that excited for The Boxtrolls. I loved Coraline and Paranorman, but it seems that the dark kitschy style that was in those former two movies is not here. And the visuals themselves don’t look very pretty.

I’m not saying that Laika shouldn’t experiment and go outside of their box, but this just looks like a misfire. But if the critics (or the rotoscopers) convince me, then I might check it out.
