“music-driven hybrid animated comedy” — doesn’t inspire faith in me, personally. Hybrid live action-animated “comedies” are pretty much THE template for making a terrible cartoon adaptation in Hollywood. Be it Garfield, Alvin & the Chipmunks, Marmaduke, Yogi Bear, The Smurfs, the “this is actually so bad, we won’t go through this” aborted Hong Kong Phooey and Marvin the Martian movies, or the prototypical Rocky & Bullwinkle movie from the 90’s. They’re always TERRIBLE. They get by because kids are generally dumb and filmmakers don’t feel like raising their sense of humor any, just getting by on the bare minimum. I don’t expect more from this.

Also, she’s a REAL hard license to use nowadays, if you ask me. There is nothing current about Betty Boop in 2014. This is something that, I mean, how can you update it? You can’t play it straight and have it be successful. This is a bizarre “get” for any studio.

I’m fascinated to see what, if anything, comes from this. But I’m expecting a dumb disappointment, to be honest.

while i do admit the studio has done amazing visuals and animation(seriously legends of Ga’Hoole made my jaw drop, considered better than some of the hollywood greats.) story wise I am worried tho, how they will pull it off……

I honestly won’t know what to think about this until I see some concept art or a teaser or SOMETHING (which will be a pretty far ways off most likely…) but if it brings more awareness to Betty Boop, especially to younger generations, I’m cautiously optimistic. She’s pretty cool! Plus it’ll make her little areas in the toon/comics area of Universal Islands of Adventure relevant again ;p

I’m gonna be honest here. I’m cautiously optimistic that this WON’T be a train wreck, but the expectation is there that it will be. It’ll be really interesting to see how Simon Cowell and Hollywood bring Betty Boop into the modern age, whether they’ll change her that severely or not I don’t know.

Wow. They’re really making a lot of movies out of the older cartoons these days, aren’t they? Alvin and the Chipmunks, The Smurfs, Garfield, Scooby Doo, Top Cat, Yogi Bear, Paddington Bear, The Peanuts, TMNT and now Betty Boop.

I’m both excited and a bit worried at the same time. I do like Animal Logic’s films but they are known for their Cgi movies and I would have preferred if this film was done using 2D animation. And I’m also worried that like many of the other adaption of these classic cartoons they’ll try to “modernize” it, but I should wait until we know more before making any judgments. And this will be good news for a few of my family members who are Betty Boop fans.
