The scenes between Bilbo and Smaug are magnificent (I love their back-and-forth as Smaug tries to locate Bilbo with his searchlight-like eyes!). But the Gollum scene made a huge impression on me as a child and has stayed with me since. This Gollum is TERRIFYING, MUCH moreso than Andy Serkis’ version. The voice created by Theodore (aka Brother Theodore) for Gollum is inhuman, disturbing — in other words, PERFECT. You really feel the mortal peril Bilbo is in, as well as the bone-chilling darkness that surrounds him. The animators did an AMAZING job establishing atmosphere, an atmosphere I felt was sorely lacking in Peter Jackson’s version of the scene. If he had seen this part of the animated “Hobbit” I think Tolkien himself would have been impressed!
