Don’t forget, Goro Miyazaki is also helming their first TV series. “Ronja (or Ronia): The Robber’s Daughter” or something… I can’t find the Youtube vid with the translated name right now:

Looks pretty great, especially for CG. Totally captures the Ghibli aesthetic, which CG has had trouble doing in the past (Ni No Kuni, for instance).

At any rate, I would not be surprised to hear that the veteran talent didn’t properly build up younger talent for this day. Seems to happen a lot; not a slam against Japan btw, but all over. It’s a big problem.

It would shock me to see the studio just up and disappear with no warning. They’ve been around for a long time, and last I heard they were in transition so Miyazaki could fully retire but they’d keep going.

Will it ever be “what it was?” No, probably not, just like Disney will never be what it was, just like Pixar will never be what it was, just like everything- everywhere- will never be exactly like what it used to be.

Hmm. For any other studio, I may see your point, but this has happened before with Ghibli. Unlike Dreamworks/Pixar/Disney they never release their full roster of upcoming films, which is a smart move in my opinion (look what’s happening with Pixar and their whole push-back catastrophe). Ghibli MAY announce what the next film they are working on is, but it is never really set in stone.

We only heard about ‘When Marnie Was There’ in December 2013, a month after ‘Kaguya’ was released. Also, Ghibli closing down would be somewhat equivalent to WDAS shutting down. It is a cultural icon and makes Japan soooooo much money. Something would have had to go really wrong for that to ever happen.

They’re making more films. Us lowly consumers just don’t know about them yet 😉

He no longer works at Ghibli, but I feel like Mamoru Hosoda is the spiritual successor to Miyazaki. His recent films have their own distinct style, but they are masterpieces in their own right. I adore ‘Summer Wars’, and ‘Wolf Children’ was extremely touching.

Their are new movie plans from them a Porco Rosso sequel is in the works right now and a CGI anime coming out soon
