Wow. Those character designs look absolutely amazing. The diversity, the details! I can’t even name a favorite yet, ’cause they all seem very awesome (:

I completely agree with you here. The original Big Hero 6 team int he comics was fully Asian. This version of the story has a more diverse group of characters. I’m 100% ok with them changing some of the looks and designs of the characters. Wasabi being one of them.

And this no way shows they changed the story to suit executives. They changed the story to make it “their own” and to put their own spin on it. Plus San Fransokyo is an America-Japan hybrid, so having some American representation (in addition to Asian) is justified.

I’m torn. On the one hand, I’m looking really forward to this since Disney’s been on a roll lately, and their “boy movies” have been pretty well received in the near-past (well… I guess it’s just Wreck-It Ralph. But still, that was awesome and did good business!). Plus, I like TJ Miller. Plus, it looks great on it’s own…

But on the other hand, I also feel like soaking this story in “Disney Aesthetic” is doing it a disservice. I mean, especially if you’ve seen Hiro’s design for Disney’s tie-in manga from the guy who did Phi Brain. Here’s a tiny pic… possibly the only one right now:

I remember when Disney actively encouraged changing art directions to suit their movies. Like when Hercules adopted a flatter, more angular, square-ish style to evoke classic Greek art? Remember Mulan also took inspiration from period/region-specific art? They changed the way they drew characters for everything they did in the 90’s… but all their CG characters look the same. The princesses from Frozen might as well be relatives of Rapunzel. Penny, from Bolt, could totally hang with the Robinsons, or kids who visited the arcade in Wreck-It Ralph.

They really should’ve pushed for a more appropriate, and more distinct, manga-esque aesthetic for this one. Just slightly. Maybe more along the lines of what IMAGI did for their (unfortunately canned) Gatchaman film a few years ago?

The push for comedy in the trailers also brings it down a bit, imo. Not that it isn’t effective and charming. I know that’s what you gotta focus on to sell animation to animation-dismissing families so they buy those tickets. They did the same thing with advertising for their last 4 movies. I just wish the trailers would be stronger in general, instead of focusing mostly on how adorable Baymax is.

Wow! So much info at once about BH6 is SUPER RADICAL MAN OMG though this is really cool!!!! I wonder how Hiro’s brother will look like. I think Honey Lemon’s personality and appearance are a bit too much like Rapunzel, but otherwise it’s GRREAT! I am SO excited about this, this will be the next big thing (get it? get it?) I know it will!!!! And of course….
