The whole “It’s just like Evangelion” is reductive nonsense used by lazy trolls at this point. It would be ludicrous, but just as valid, to hear a troll complain it was just like Battletech too because of giant robots. It’s like if people never actually saw Pac Rim, but read the premise on IGN a year ago or something and made up their mind.

Personally, I think there is a huge difference between “ripping off” and “paying homage”. What Del Toro did is pay homage to mecha and monster movies and anime of the past. He may deny his knowledge of NGE, however he has always said that in designing the film and creating the story, there was a lot that he was looking back on for inspiration.

No, that's incorrect. A group of people spouting off things like that doesn't mean they're right. That's an ignorant claim. People can and have been wrong about 'opinions' such as that. You and everyone else making this claim refuses to see that the two series have little, if anything, in common but want to assert one being a 'ripoff' of the other for whatever asinine reasoning inside your noggins.

I actually was half kidding in the original comment but whatever. What I’m saying is, other people (a lot of other people) have made similar statements to mine in regard to NGE. If I’m seeing it and other people are seeing it, something has to be there. I’m not saying it’s exactly the same in any way. There are just similarities. Also, Del Toro has actually confessed to the mecha anime influence thing. The examples he gave are Patlabor and Tetsujin-28. (I haven’t seen either, though Patlabor has been on my watch list for ages.)
At this point, we can just agree to disagree.

No, he didn't. There's a huge difference between something being in the same genre as something else and being a ripoff. Learn the difference.

Anyway, everything I said can’t be wrong, or else other people wouldn’t be making a similar argument (as you just stated). Eva is not “precious” to me, but it is a really great anime that does deserve the respect it gets. As I said in an earlier post, (which you seem to have ignored) it’s obvious Del Toro ripped from other mecha anime shows as well. But whatevs. I haven’t seen Pacific Rim since last summer, so I’m not going to argue about a movie I’ve seen once. I’m just recalling thoughts I had as I watched the film initially and my thoughts soon after I finished watching.

You’re really reaching to find ‘similarities’ to the two franchises. Just because both have giant robots and have the pilots’ state of mind as ONE plot point (which both are extremely different from each other) doesn’t make Pacific Rim a ripoff. If, for instance, Raleigh Beckett were a neurotic mess with mommy issues, then I’d think PR was ripping off EVA. But no, there were no obvious or even subtle parallels between the two. Even the monsters were different from each other. So, everything you’ve claimed is entirely wrong. Sorry, but I’m sick of the accusations that Pacific Rim is ‘ripping off’ the ‘precious’ Evangelion. And I say that as a fan of EVA myself.

Oh no, I think you’re taking me the wrong way. I’m not talking down NGE at all or talking up PR. I love NGE because it has so much to offer, and I definitely found PR to be a movie I simply enjoyed watching for the sake of entertainment value (though the fact it didn’t pass the bechdel test will always bother me). But it was very apparent to me while watching PR last summer in theaters that there were a lot of similarities with NGE specifically. As I said in my previous post, the need for the pilot to be in the right state of mind is specific to NGE among the mecha genre in general, and Del Toro easily ripped that. I haven’t watch PR again since I saw it last summer, but I remember thinking a good chunk of it throughout the film was just stolen pieces from NGE as well as mecha anime in general.
