I can understand the idea of the gateway lego, but I’d see it hindering MUCH more than helping. How many people will really never play with Legos because they aren’t shaped like Luke Skywalker? If the answer is “many” then I find that more sad than anything else, but that’s the world we live in, I guess. Rather play with someone else’s imagination than one’s own…

They already did a Toy Story line which i loved. I got a couple of those for my son 😉

JK Riki,
The bricks with which you “built a million things” are still available. Those same bricks let me build this set. (Which I can assure you, required considerable imagination in many aspects of design.) No amount of licensed sets can take away the base creativity injection-molded into every LEGO brick.

If anything, the licensed sets are a gateway into personal creations for those who might never pick one up. Specifically, this set is a testament to an incredible film in a form that represents so many others.

I have to admit, I’m not a fan of themed LEGO sets. It’s essentially all there IS anymore. When I was young I had a bucket of Legos and zero instructions or “themes” to them. And I built a million things and used my imagination to create a thousand scenarios. With things like this I feel like all the imagining is done for you (or, for “the kids”). I guess I’d just rather see the “anything is possible” aspect of toys be brought back instead of yet another “Obviously this is Harry Potter, he can’t be anything else” theme dropping.
