This movie made me cry so hard. Getting put in a home is a worry of most people and this does not sugarcoat it. That said I think it is great. The animation is lovely and there are moments of comedy which make it all seem very human. I loved the moment when they finally jump in the darn pool. I cheered! It’s a shame these movies are seen by so few.

I was able to watch the film over the weekend and I have to say, though there was humor in it, yeah I don’t think it should have been billed as a complete comedy. I do think “Dark Comedy” is sufficient though as calling it just a drama would undercut the well timed comedy they did incorporate into the film. Obviously it was a marketing ploy which feared that if billed as anything less, it would not attract enough attention.

All in all it was a decent film. Some missed opportunities in terms of storytelling, but some solid ideas, especially in the beginning. Thanks for your input!

It was a while ago, so maybe I’m only remembering the incredibly deep, poignant stuff, but I couldn’t even agree on the label “dark comedy.” It’s not that it didn’t have jokes, but the jokes were there almost to lighten the situation, not to BE the situation. It is a very, very, VERY emotional film. Possibly the most serious animated feature film I’ve ever seen. I’m not sure what they were thinking with that iTunes listing.

If you check out the short excerpts of reviews at Rotten Tomatoes http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/wrinkles/ the word “comedy” is rarely if ever mentioned, and when it is the reference is “sprinkled” or “touches.” Again, I can’t recommend the film ENOUGH- definitely see it- but just know what you’re getting into. Deep waters ahead, leaving you asking serious real-world questions and (hopefully) caring that much more for your fellow human. 🙂

In reply to JK Riki. Maybe you're right, it may be a marketing strategy as this is a common occurrence with foreign language films. However, iTunes does classify the film as a comedy. Maybe "dark comedy" is more appropriate?

Oh WOW does that trailer misrepresent the film! Ha ha, I guess they wanted it to seem funny to appeal to a US audience? The film is not. It is deep, and heartwarming, and tragic, and compelling. I think they may have pulled the four jokes in the entire movie for that trailer. I warn anyone expecting comedy that this is an emotional ride, not a comedy. However it is deeper and more compelling that most animated films, so it comes highly recommended. I wrote a full review of it if anyone is interested (though I saw it in its original Spanish, so I don’t know how the dub will have changed it). http://www.animatorisland.com/review-arrugas/
