My favorite part of this episode is Mason's comment about how somebody should make a music video with the song "Pink elephants on parade" from Dumbo w/ clips from Princess Mononoke. I ended up doing just that! lol. You can watch the animated music video here: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2zpdc3

Great podcast! I think this movie was very well-made, although it's probably the most violent, bloody, and gory movie that I've ever seen!

Wow! Thank you for the reply (And sorry for my late one) and for even planning to include my email in the next episode! I completely understand, it must be hard to run a website, especially one like this where it's a community of animation fans coming together. I don't understand what was wrong with me when I originally wrote that comment, looking back at it now I simply wanted to say "Hi! Just wanted to know if you were getting my emails, I understand if you can't show all of them, just wanted to make sure you guys are getting them!" but for some reason I started rambling and I don't think I even got my original point across. I had also planned to send the email since the moment I finished your One Hundred and One Dalmatian episode, but my laziness caused me to send it in much later, so it's all my fault!

Hehe No problem! Surprisingly I haven't listened to that episode (I know, blasphemy, right?). But now that you've mentioned it I'm going to check it out straight away! Thanks :-D

Awe! Thanks so much for the support David! I'm glad you enjoyed the episode (especially because it was my first and I was super nervous!). I guess it was technically my second time, as they had me on a few episodes ago for a "Get to know the writers" kind of thing where I did Catch & Fire, but maybe next time we could do a re-fresher as my opinions tend to shift anyways :)

AH! I keep forgetting I need to take a look at that doc. series myself! Thanks for the reminder hahaha

Awesome episode guys! I know I'm a little late to the game here, but I just finished listening to it and man you guys always get me pumped up about animation! By the end of this episode I had already made a trip to Amazon to check out Miyazaki's two part biography (thank you very much, Mayra) and began watching The Making Of Princess Mononoke on Youtube.

I usually wait to listen to your podcast when I'm into one of my drawing binges that tend to go on a few hours. Something about hearing other people as passionate as a subject as you are tends to get me in a creative mood and for that, I thank you all!

Mayra did an AMAZING job! She is SO cool! She shouldn't have to worry about getting any negative response for her ratings; at least not on this site. I thought it was really cool how she was able to give both her personal opinion of the film as well as being able to distance herself and judge it objectively. I REALLY hope you have her on again whenever you do Kiki's Delivery Service. I'm surprised you didn't have her play CATCH & FIRE but this episode had SO much already, I can understand. Maybe next time! Thanks again for giving us fellow Animation Addicts something to geek out about and I'll see you again on your review of Tarzan!

We have a backlog of emails (seriously, like 35 emails) and we're trying to get through them as fast as we can (that's why we read 3-5 each episode, if time permits). We are trying to read the older emails first before getting to the newer ones. Sometimes we'll pull a newer email and read it if there are a bunch of emails that follow the same "theme." OR if it's a review for the movie we're doing that episode. But all the emails are neatly organized in a queue to be read, so we haven't forgotten about yours, I promise!

Regarding one of your emails, your Princess Mononoke review/email was sent in a few days after we recorded (we record about 2 weeks before release so that way we have time to edit), so we weren't able to include it. :( But we'll include it in next episode. :)

I too concur with watching the documentary. I saw it a while ago and it was really interesting to watch Miyazaki's thinking process and oversee his directorial duties; really great for any aspiring animators to watch. I haven't read the books mentioned in the podcast but will definitely check them out some time.

I know it's a bit of a culture shock watching spirited away or mononoke but they are unlike anything seen in animation, so it's so marvelous to see how far they can go with the animation. Plus, Ghibli does have tamer movies so it just goes to show how experimental they can be.

I too agree with the recommendations. Def. check out whisper of the heart, only yesterday, or up on poppy hill. Those movies are calmer and rewatchable. Perhaps less well known compared to favorites like mononoke or spirited, but they are ones I like going back to after having discovered them. It will be interesting to listen to your analysis on grave of the fireflies in the future; I know Mason said this movie was the most mature movie they've reviewed for the podcast...
