I just came back from watching this film in IMAX 3D. IT WAS PERFECT. I haven't watched the original, but I absolutely adored this one. I loved how everyone in this movie interacted with each other, the dynamics of the relationships. I adore Valka (that's her name, yeah?) and Stoic's relationship. My heart. The feels. Too many, tell my mother I fought as hard as I could. I do agree with @millernumber1:disqus that the characters like Astrid and co. didn't have much to do with the plot, which sucks, because I enjoy them.

One thing that really stuck out to me, was the way even though Drago lost an arm to a dragon and Hiccup had lost a leg to a dragon, it wasn't their circumstances that made them good or bad, but the way they reacted to it. That's a really great message. I really love the way they didn't hit that too hard on the head, but lightly tapped it instead.

Not to mention, I absolutely adore Jónsi's song for this film. That man can do no wrong. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'll go listen to "Where No One Goes" and pretend to fly, and then listen to "For the Dancing and Dreaming" and try not to cry.

I thought it was really beautifully animated, and much better designed than the first film. Sadly, the characters who aren't in Hiccup's immediate family really don't seem to have much to do. As awesome as Astrid is, she really could be deleted from the movie without affecting any major plot events - which is a shame, since she's definitely my favorite. I just wish they would make her more integral to the plot and character's lives. Similarly, the villain is incredibly shallow, with key motivations held back until the reveal makes nearly no difference emotionally.

Ah, well.

HTTYD2 is so properly executed that no one talks about it or even hype about it after few days, I guess. Very disappointing Opening Weekend, hope it manages it.

Most definitely a beautiful film. It is breathtaking to look at throughout. It's not just the "locations", but the characters. Everything is done brilliantly down to the most minuscule details.
The story is pretty great as well. It doesn't feel like a re-hash of the first film. Sure the core idea is to convince people that dragons and people can co-exist and it's refreshing that Hiccup's dedication to that idea is ultimately what causes much of the conflict. He saw success where no one else could in the first film and he was convinced he could achieve the same result again and failed. There was natural progression in relationships and lingering consequences from the first film. The characters are brilliant and fun as always. Hiccup has grown up a lot, but it is clear that he still isn't completely sure of himself. Toothless is adorable and snarky. Astrid is confident and tough, but has grown as well. I only wish we could've spent more time with all of these characters. The film has so much to do and it is soooooo well done. You fall in love with the world and the characters so it is only natural that you want to spend more time with them.
Overall, great film! I'm not sure it's as great as the first, but I see it as world-building. It's a wonderful middle chapter that moves the world forward in some pretty drastic ways, but it does not feel concluded. I think the next film will be fantastic. Oh, and one more thing: the music. I liked it. I loved how John Powell reused themes from the first film all over the place. The original soundtrack is my favorite soundtrack ever so it had a lot to live up to. The music is not as great as the first, but I am definitely adding it to the collection. Who knows, maybe it will grow on me.
