In my opinion, Up loses almost all of its charm and promise after the first five minutes when Ellie passes away. It has the most emotionally searing opening in animation history but after that, the movie never quite manages to recapture that excellence.

For that reason, I'd rank the entire Toy Story trilogy, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Wall-E and even Monsters Inc. before it.

Great points! Even though Ratatouille is my all time favorite Pixar movie, UP comes very close and is my second favorite Pixar movie. Just like Ratatouille the story is very unique and original, the characters are so fun and well designed and there's so much in emotion in this movie.

Although UP isn't my personal favourite Pixar movie (that's a tossup between Ratatouille and the Toy Story films) it is definitely up there, and I do think that the opening scene is possibly the best thing Pixar has ever given us. Another thing I really like is the villain - Pixar usually avoids villains at all, or when they have them they're not that compelling (at least compared to the Disney villains), but the one in this genuinely surprised me and gave me the shivers during the 'big reveal' scene. UP and A Bug's Life have the best Pixar baddies, in my opinion.
Great article, makes me want to watch this film again!
