Good podcast! I saw the film a long time ago, but I don't remember it much besides that I wasn't a big fan of it.

And aw, poor Chelsea!

This is one of those films I don't know where I stand on it. I was already in my senior year of high school when it came out, yet my mom cared to videotape it one night on Pay-Per-View while I was in college. I watched it then rather than on the big screen and found it quite enjoyable (one of those times where I often watched the darn thing so many times I thought I wore out the tape badly). When I started using the Internet, I saw there was quite a fandom already in place for this film though it mostly was quite small and even going to Universal's official Balto page was enough to whet my appetite for the time being, I quickly saw where it's path headed much in the same way The Lion King inspired greatly. Both movies and their fans never seem to find an endpoint at all and it only gets more convoluted the further I went with it. I'm not into it anymore.

Although you don't mention him by name, Phil Collins plays Muk one of the polar bears that does all the talking in such a silly English schoolboy kind of way he spoke. At least you guys refrained from the typical "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon" bit. That got old fast yet people needed an excuse to look this stuff up, and I suppose Balto could be placed somewhere on those lists.

The later DTV sequels were OK for the most part, I didn't particularly liked "Wolf Quest" but enjoyed "Wings of Change" since it seemed a bit closer to the original film in tone (I see it had the original writers on it so that was a nice move).

Someone always has to preserve the memory. Balto apparently was in a circus for a number of years until one Cleveland businessman and some schoolkids got to set him free to roam a Cleveland zoo until his eventual demise.

Great review of an often overlooked movie. I am also very glad that you acknowledged the direct to video sequels. I know that you are not always fans of those, but the Balto sequels (particularly Balto 3: Wings of change) were decent companions the the first film.
