Hey Pablo – I have to agree with Giovanni here. Yes, your opinion is completely valid and worth discussing, but there’s one element here that I think is missing. Although Pixar has claimed that “story is king”, they never said that they couldn’t stray from that formula ever. I agree that this was a fun little tale without a heady amount of story – maybe it was closer to a “Cars Toon”. Remember that “Cars Toons” aren’t packed with a lot of story elements either – they’re created to have fun with the characters.

I understand what you’re saying. But I’m not asking Pixar to make me cry with the short. My problem with it was that there was no story at all. Stories mean conflict, complications, something…These things don’t have to be huge. But they have to be there. If this was indeed our last time with the Oozma Kappa brothers they deserved better. Even a simple story like Squishy not feeling he can party and then managing to have fun would’ve made the whole thing ten times better.

I disagree with this review. I’m just tired of people having to “feel” so much during a Pixar-anything these days. The company, over many years, has proven they know how to write great stories with great characters, that have heart behind them. So why can’t they ever just have fun and do something wacky, with no character arc or a change-in-character. While the story did focus on Mater and his development as a character, this does go back to Cars 2 again. Everyone got so upset about Cars 2 for not touching our hearts like Pixar films before it had. It was just a fun, spy/racing film. Pixar did four big hitters before Cars 2. They can have a fun break. We still trust them to return to their original formula. Party Central is just the studio giving us, probably, one last time with the Oozma Kappa brothers. I can see why it didn’t focus on one character. I’m sorry this response seems so heated. But I feel like people are going to use something like Party Central as another excuse to say how Pixar is “slipping” or “losing their touch”. Sure, it may be a rough patch right now, but I am sure the studio will climb back up with two films with original concepts next year.

Good review! I understand the whole “missing story” bit. It was something I saw last year with Planes. In that movie, after Dusty had overcome being the underdog, there was nothing more to see. They solved the primary problem within 40 minutes of the movie.

But one thing, are you sure this is your least-favorite short from Pixar? The “Legend of Mordu” from Brave was pretty tasteless to me.

I agree. I watched the short and never really got amped up about what I was seeing. The jokes were funny, I loved the humans and how their story ended, but other than that…nothing. The premise of the short is on stealing something that’s not yours. I know it was presented in a jovial lighthearted way, but I was still a bit turned off by the “steal the party” solution. Bummer. 🙁
