I Won’t Say I’m In Love is just brilliant in that it feels so fresh and unique when compared to the other Disney Broadway-esque numbers.

In reply to Kynan. That's great! To be honest, I really do not like that people try to make the BIG 4 as if they have 0 mistakes in it. Don't get me wrong, they are great movies and have stood the test of time very well. But as film studies student, I try to dissect the good and the bad in any film, even ones that are considered the greatest movies ever made. I think that's why I believe the 2 comeback movies (Mulan and Tarzan) should rank up there with the Big 4 because they have the same qualities. But I also try to look at the positives with Pocahontas, Hunchback and Hercules despite these movies having elements that disappoint me.

I completely agree. Hercules is my favourite Disney film I’ve been requesting it to be on the podcast for a while now and am so excited to listen to it! I really hope this Blu-ray release will help to bring the film into the spotlight.

5 for 5!

I want to point out some interesting uncommon pieces of Trivia I know about this film:

1. Alan Menken is in favor and talks regularly about getting this show together for a Broadway run.

2. When asked about Alan Menken’s work, Stephen Schwartz sites “Go the Distance” as one of his favorite Menken tunes. He says he hears it a lot in auditions and marvels at how wonderful it is.

3. Tress MacNeille originally had lines as Aphrodite (before there were designs) and played her as Mariyin Monroe. Her lines were ultimately cut but in the opening you can see Hermes whiz past her and her dress flies up ala Marilyn. It was a very sweet nod to Tress. Aphrodite is later voiced by Lisa Kudrow and has her own theme song!

4. Charlton Heston originally voiced the narrator role but for the TV series an uncanny Robert Stack stepped in. It’s kind of shocking they have the same voice isn’t it?

5. Disney held a HERCULEAN premiere weekend called “The Hercules World Premiere Weekend” in NYC starting at their newly renovated New Amsterdam Theatre. If I’m not mistaken this preceded King David as Disney’s first foray into Disney’s greater presence in NY (notwithstanding the Pocahontas’s central Park event) . There were events all over Manahattan including a Hercules Electrical Parade.

Fun article for a fun movie! Hercules doesn’t quite hit classic status for me–it doesn’t reach the emotional/artistic highs of The Lion King, and its humor is pretty anachronistic which makes it feel more dated than something like Emperor’s New Groove (the funniest Disney film, IMO), but it’s still a light and very fun watch throughout. The Menken score is a blast–Zero to Hero is still one of my favorite songs to play from the big Disney Piano Fake Book, and I Won’t Say is a rather quirky romance theme that’s only gotten better over time (unlike the Air Herc jokes!). And yeah, Hades is fun and memorable; inspired performance there. Four out of five stars!
