Even though I wasn't a big fan of Divergent, it was certainly not a hunger games rip off. They were both dystopian YA novels with strong female leads, but that's about all they had in common.

No, the reason I don't want to read it is because I didn't enjoy the author's writing style. I didn't get the second book because I didn't like the story very much. I wasn't feeling Tris and Four's relationship, and the Dystopian world didn't connect with me. Everything just seemed very stiff and calculated. When I was reading, I wasn't really influenced by the opinions of others because I read it before anyone else that I knew. The fact that many people didn't really like the last book made me even more unwilling to continue reading!

No! It! Isn't!!
As Sherlock Holmes said once, "It is irrational to theorize without proper data". Since you haven't read Divergent(?) you shouldn't say that Divergent's a rip off! I've read the books, haven't seen film yet. Read the books, they're awesome! Give it a shot- you'll probably love it! Too bad, a friend told me it was a horrible adaptation. ;(

I know that Divergent has a very loyal fan base, but I have to say that I like The Hunger Games a lot better. Divergent was an interesting concept, but I couldn't stand the author's writing style. She provided almost no detail, and I found her use of words to be quite dull. For God's sake, we never even learned the hair color of the male lead in the first book. I read Divergent pretty fast and compulsively, but I didn't have any lasting connection with it as I did with books like The Hunger Games and Harry Potter. In the two years since I've read it, I've never really felt a pull to read the sequel. After hearing such negative things about the last book, maybe it's a good thing that I didn't continue.

However, I think I will see the movie for three reasons. First, there is a lot of action, and that usually translates into film well. Second, there won't be an issue with the writing style and lack of detail because we will get the magic of the motion picture! Third, Shailene Woodley and Theo James. I think they were cast just right (or maybe that is just my bias because I love them both! My mind was blown when I figured out that Theo was Mr. Pamuk from Downton Abbey).

I enjoyed the Hunger Games books, but I do agree that the films improved on them. The original has some great concepts and ideas, but it was held back somewhat by the style of writing. Film -- particularly as so much of the story fits into to the idea of the "media," its place in society and how we respond to it -- is a much better fit, and not being bound to Katniss' PoV was refreshing.

I haven't read Divergent yet, though. It's one of those where the concept just doesn't appeal all that much, and I think reading the Hunger Games first put me off, somewhat.

I actually believe that I read somewhere that both of the books were written and edited by their respective authors at about the same time, and while The Hunger Games was published first, there was no way that they could be rip offs of each other. That being said, I thought that the Hunger Games book was fairly generic and just a tweenager "Let us introduce you to what a dystopian book is" kind of story for those kids who are too fidgety to sit through a dystopian book with a slower pace such as The Giver, but the movie ended up expanding that world, and making me enjoy it more. I had actually preferred the Divergent book series to THG, but have yet to see the movie. I just felt as though the world was more developed and less basic and hastily put together than THG.
Okay, I am sorry for that rant, but to get back to my original purpose- in no way is Divergent a rip-off, it would be impossible plus the story is extremely different.
