Actually, ‘An American Tail’ was not the first non-Disney animated film to do well at the box office. That honor goes to the Fleischers’ ‘Gulliver’s Travels’, released in 1939. As for the first animated film to outgross a Disney one, yeah, ‘Tail’ is the first. That being said, yep, the restoration better be okay because the ‘NIMH’ Blu-ray had questionable PQ.

An American Tail (the first non-Disney film to succeed in the box office) is one of my favourite animated films of all time. The same goes to Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (Disney’s first animated feature), Toy Story 1 (Pixar’s first animated feature and the first fully computer-animated feature film in the world) & Beauty and the Beast (One of Disney’s greatest animated movies and the first animated movie to be nominated an Oscar for Best Picture).

I was originally suspecting An American Tail to hit the shelves on Blu-ray in 2016 (in its 30th anniversary). And also for the Blu-ray release, pulled down to March 2014, I just hope it’s an excellent restoration. I hope the sound mix will be the original VHS mix instead of the DVD mix (with the more mature voices of the Orphans in the alley) and I also hope the color is more brighter.

I find it strange that Dreamworks is releasing “Spirit” on blu-ray before “The Prince of Egypt” I feel that The Prince of Egypt was a much stronger film in every way. Plus, it was Dreamworks’ first animated feature. I hate it when studios try to pretend their movies never happened, or they just ignore them and push other movies on us instead. Hopefully we’ll see a high def release of The Prince of Egypt in the near future!

I find it very strange that the hand-drawn non Disney films (I.E. The Secret of NIMH, Anastasia, The Prince of Egypt, Charlotte’s Web etc.) get pushed into the back corner and the non-Disney CGI films like Shrek or Despicable Me are front and center. Other animation studios should learn from Disney. Disney still promotes Beauty and the Beast and Lion King along with Finding Nemo and the Incredibles. Because without one, there isn’t another.

I herd the transfer for Secret of NIMH was awful. I might wait on this. I don’t want to get a Blu-Ray unless it has a good transfer.
