It definitely has that “not so happy ever after” ending with Unico being exiled again and again–its something I didn’t think about as a kid but now it does seem unfair to him. The second film “Island of Magic” is a bit more cohesive overall when it comes to storytelling.

Interesting that you mentioned the Buddhist themes because during my research I found out that Tezuka did a manga about the life of Buddha and another on the themes of reincarnation in “Phoenix”.

I’m more prepared if I know a movie is aimed at adults or something. It’s like the visuals didn’t match the tone & I didn’t know where it was going. Maybe I didn’t understand that backstory why Unico kept leaving, or maybe my mood was off to begin with who knows. It’s worth checking out if you’re less crazy sensitive than I am lol. Someday I might give it another viewing. I definitely remember it having a lot of Buddhist themes.

Much appreciate it Morgan and thank you! It’s definitely fairy-tale storytelling and a bit dark at times like “Snow White” but nothing overly frightening for kids.
Looking back I see the bits of Anime introduced to use in the 80’s before it became much more popular and mainstream into the 90’s and on. Aside from “Unico”, Nickelodeon did something similar with “Grimm Fairy Tales Classics” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grimm's_Fairy_Tale_Classics
