I've watched this about thirty times now, in the theater and at home, and each and every time the combination of the animation, the song and the sheer power of Idina's voice has me in tears by the end.

I absolutely love, love, LOVE Elsa's slit skirt as she powerfully struts to the balcony, and the perfect finishing touch is her eyebrow raise on the last line.

This is sheer perfection as far as I'm concerned.

CG is by far still a new medium. It's only been really around since the 80s! Even then in the 90s people really started innovating in it. Just in the last couple of years has there been a huge push for Non Photorealistic Rendering that is definitely going to change the look of things. Keane, Baxter and the like all sit on the shoulders of Milt Kahl and Art Babbit who perfected the medium in their time.

For CG? Well we're getting there, give us some time :D!

[edit] Thinking about this for a bit, what did you think of John Kahr's Paperman?

Very true! Two of my favorite animators of all time there! I feel like Pixar really excels at animating in CG but Disney is still missing something that Pixar has. They dove into humans with their CG also while Pixar took their time more...my favorite Disney CG film animation-wise has to be Wreck it Ralph so far. I did LOVE Frozen, though...

A lot of it has to do with not how many pixels you can render really
well, but how well the animator has performed the character. James Baxter and Glen Keane really brought an emotional resonance to those characters you mentioned. Their sense of human anatomy and movement really brought the characters to life and it seems more difficult to bring those elements in CG because it is a computer generated character. Anything that is CG, your eyes automatically detect that it is not real so its more difficult to trick the audience into thinking they are watching a real life person, which is what true acting is all about. Although even in 2d, that certainly holds true too but there are particular scenes Keane and Baxter have animated which really make you believe the character is real for even a few moments. I have yet to see CG really do that yet. But I have to agree that Idina's vocal performance is stun worthy. Plus the elegance and synchronicity of her movements with the song (especially while creating the castle) is like watching a ballet/orchestra.

yes, I hafta agree. the Disney Revival Era hasn't reached to the peak of 2D animation yet. This can prove that Lasseter himself is no match for Howard Ashman or even Walt Disney. But I think he's trying his best.
Also, did u notice that the leaders of each Disney golden age died of an incurable disease? Walt died of lung cancer (no cure at that time), Ashman died of AIDS. Hope Lasseter will be okay..... or else im gonna break down and we all will have to suffer another Disney dark age.

*shivers* so amazing on all fronts - animation, music, voice performance, everything! I think my favourite bit is when she's walking towards her balcony at the very end. Compared to how she was very clenched in and tense before, I love that she has this little confident, feminine swagger as she walks. Bravo!
