In reply to <a href="https://www.rotoscopers.com/2013/11/28/princess-profiles-merida/#comment-4252">Pedro</a>.

Really, did they make fun of Disney for doing fairytales? I thought it was mainly that they wanted to get away from the seven song setup and the "princess as a love interest" thing associated with Disney. Although, since Atta in A Bug's Life is exactly that, I guess they were referring to human princesses.
About Merida, she is a good role model when it comes to defying societal norms that you disagree with, daring to be yourself, and also learning to accept and overcome your faults in order to become a better person. All of these take a lot of guts. The movie was not all about Elinor's development and Merida teaching her to understand her standpoint, it was also about Merida's development. They needed to learn from each other, and the intention was never for Merida to be a perfect person from the beginning. Like you said, she had her shortcomings and she needed to grow up, which she does during the course of the movie.
Now the movie isn't completely original in all aspects but the mother-daughter relationship is still a relatively unexplored one, and it's unusual for a princess movie not to feature a romantic sub-plot. Not to mention it's based on an original idea, which almost none of Disney's movies are.
However, I agree with you a bit on the character design issue. Merida is a classic fiery redhead with crazy hair to represent her wild, free-spirited personality, and Elinor being a traditionalist is shown by her brown hair and eyes (read: boring, close-minded and plain). Don't get me wrong, I actually love Elinor, but as someone with brown hair and brown eyes I get insulted by these stereotypes. I wish at least the triplets could have had more of Elinor's features to break the pattern, as they were mischievous, fun-loving characters. I love Merida's hair and I wouldn't want it to be changed, but I'd like the existing stereotypes to be balanced out with some broken ones.

I agree, I was sad that Merida had to become a Disney princess. I would like for Pixar to own its films and characters alone. Making her a princess also caused some problems with the redesign and though they usually get along, Pixar and Disney do have their creative differences and it shows up every now and then. I l think many just assume Brave is only a Disney movie and that's a bit strange to me because it's not a musical and the animation is done in a style that differs from that of Tangled and Frozen (personally, I prefer the Brave animation style).

I don't necessarily mean that Merida isn't supposed to be gay, I really don't know if that was the intention, but there is one part before clan Dingwald presents their suitor and it appears to be the huge muscular guy before he steps out of the way to show the real tiny kid who is the real suitor. Merida actually looks up a bit and seems a little impressed by him, which could be interpreted as attraction.

I have to agree...though my main problem with Merida is the mind set behind her. The "all the other princesses were bad role models, but THIS is the well done one" idea. Even worse, Merida doesn't even life up to what she is supposed to be. She is a huge step back to the princesses of the Renaissance era - which were great back then, because they ware a huge step forward from the classic princesses, but since then, Disney has developed further and presented us with layered and competent characters who have way better motivations that "I want mooooooooooore!"

I've never hated so much an animated character like I hated Merida. This film is an absolute zero at originality, even the script lines were stolen from other disney movies. Besides they made fun of disney for many years in their interviews, for doing fairytales and they stated that they would NEVER do one, because it was old and dusty and they were all original and new...and then they actually MAKE one that is probably the less original take on fairytales that I have ever seen in my life. Not just that, but her character was incredibly awful, she was cruel, selfish and cold, specially to her mother, the way she treats her mother kills me. Besides the horse and hair thing, I'm wild because I have bad hair and a horse, it's like the most cliche thing they could have ever come up with, not to mention the dress thing. Every scene, every second, was something stolen from another picture. I felt insulted. Besides the great performance Emma Thompson offered to the audience, there wasn't anything for me about this film that was bold, exciting or new. Even the human animation felt awkward at most times, very exagerated. Not to mention on the artwork that was pratically NONE. It was very weak. And there was so many possibilities...The Secret Of Kells was incredible, and it was the movie I HOPED Brave would be, many years ago, when I first heard about it. And then it won the oscar over Paranorman and Wreck It Ralph? That were clearly way better films? I never felt such injustice watching the ceremony. This film is an absolute joke to me, as her character is, and I don't think she should've joined the Disney Princess line when she ISN'T a Disney character for christ sake. This film is gonna be forgotten and lost as the years go by, and I can't wait for that. What a bother.

Really, the show-stealer of this movie was Merida's hair. We were all riveted to every movement or that red mass, remember? I'm pretty sure every girl in the audience was in envy of it when I went to see it. ;)

I think that they made a good choice in making her a princess. theres already a badass chick who is not a princess (Mulan XD), so if merida isn't a princess, the kids would think that you have to be pretty and fall in love to be a princess.

Along with Mulan, this is the other Disney Princess that I don't like being considered a Disney Princess, mainly for the fact that she's a Pixar property, rather than Disney. Yes, I know Disney owns Pixar now, but it's like calling Thor a Disney character; it just feels weird.

I don't know how I feel about her character. per se. I've only seen it once and don't remember it that well, but I do remember that I wasn't entirely excited with her character. I loved her voice actress' work though.

Merida has her good moments but I am disappointed that she takes traits from Disney heroines instead of being Pixar's own original heroine. The trailers were very misleading. I don't mind the mother/daughter part of the story, but I find that the rest of the story is recycled Disney material. Now, you are probably going to ask me "What about Tangled or Frozen? They take things from previous Disney movies don't they?" Yes, but that is because it's DISNEY ANIMATION not PIXAR. When dreamworks made How to Train Your Dragon and Rise of the Guardians (Both fantasies that have some fairy tale inspiration), I cannot say they have a dreamwork's style because then I would be comparing it to Shrek. BUT, what I can say is that they felt like dreamworks because they did not steal anything from Disney. Those movies were good on their own merit. With Brave, outside of the mother/daughter angle of the story (and for that fact that it is not musical) falls short in terms of originality. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed watching the movie. The animation is gorgeous and the music is great. In terms of Disney Princesses, Pocahontas is the only one I have a problem with because I don't like the film in general. The rest (including Brave) I enjoy. So, that's basically how I feel about Merida.
