I think the rules are more along the line of this:
1. You have to be based on a fairy tale or a legend (which excludes more or less all female royals or somewhat royals, with the exception of Megara, Kida and Maid Marian).
2. You have to be human (which excludes Marian)
3. You have to be the protagonist of your movie (which normally would exclude Jasmine, but because she fulfils the first two points and her movie was very successful, she gets a pass....Kida is not even there until far in the second half of her movie though, and the hero of Hercules is, well Hercules).
4. You have to be a role model (which excludes Megara again, because she starts out as somewhat villain).

I am happy that you guys brought up the reasons why most of the non-parthenon Disney Princesses are not in there. I have a suggestion for you: you should do a profile of Anastasia (1997, Fox). It isn't made by Disney, but she is, in Disney terms, a "real" princess:

1. Profit: this movie made about $139,804,348 when it was made.
2. The issue with actually blood: Anastasia, the youngest daughter of Tsar Nicholas ll, was actually the princess, but over half of the movie, she isn't exactly "princess-like", but she is the Grand Duchess.
3. Main protagonist: Anastasia is the main character; the movie is named by her! Also, the antagonist, Rasputin, is after her to KILL her the entire movie! She did kill him (a lot like Dr. Facilier :), and killing the antagonist gives any princess brownie points.
4. The classic look: In the beginning, she may have not been the most regal, but by the end, she very much looked like any of the other European princess in the 1900's (she is Russian), dress, tiara, and everything.

5. I hope she's human. Or at least a very real ghost or Hommunculi or something along those lines.

She also has a very reputable background, and a noteworthy legend around her name ( Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna of Russia) and the fact that her entire family, with the exception of her grandmother, was killed at the end of the Russian Revolution. That also makes the movie very compelling: she wants family, and her grandmother Marie wants to find her lost granddaughter. There have been a lot of movies with plots about families (including the iconic movie Frozen, which I am very excited for), so this would fit perfectly in with the other plots of the other princesses. Don't forget Dimitri! Dimitri, the young conboy in whom she falls in love with, was a servant in her house. Do you know any other princesses that marry a servant (besides Buttercup in The Princess Bride)? She also makes very important decisions for the plot (like going into St. Petersburg instead of the other town and making the trip to France). My last point is: she has a cute puppy sidekick, Pooka. Every good princess needs a good sidekick, and he is very good!

Thank you and goodbye!

Maybe one of the biggest requirements of the Princess line is a role-model attitude. I like Vanellope as a character but she's too rude & probably too short for the marketing people to want to line her up by the others. I'm not sure about Meg's attitude but it's been awhile since I watched Hercules. I think Kida has the right attitude, but we didn't get to know her very well...maybe if they had focused on her more it would've been a better movie too. Like the article said, they weren't main protagonists.

I have no issue with Mulan in the "princess" line & being used by Disney as a positive icon. She's beautiful when she's being herself, a more-than-capable & intelligent tomboy, and selflessly risked everything to save her family. I'd rather Mulan was there than Merida. Although I guess she shaped up at the very end. I guess I prefer when they have goodhearted dreams in the first place before facing their challenges. Not that other types of character arcs can't make super classic characters too... Gosh. Appeal is complicated. Let's just rename it to Disney Legends.

I think it would be more accurate to call the line-up 'Disney Heroines', but either way it is nice to have Mulan included. Mulan is certainly one of my favourite 'princesses', she's an awesome, well-rounded character. Personally I don't care for the 'Disney Princesses' franchise as the portrayal of the characters seems far from their 'movie selves',

In the Disney film, yes, that's how they made Pocahontas a princess. But in historical and tribal terms, Pocahontas' tribe did not operate in that fashion where chief's daughters were considered the equivalent of a princess. They were pretty much like the rest of the tribe for the most part.
