I love Snow White and just ignore any feminist who tries to berate her. She doesn't let the dwarfs (unless you're a Tolkien fan, then it's "dwarves") push her around, she takes care of them and is kind to them, and in return for forcing herself to stay at their house, she cleans and cooks for them.

For a 14 year-old girl, she looks like in her 20's. Then again, I feel that Aurora looked like in her 20's and not actually 16. The only Disney Princess that actually appeared young to me was probably Eilonwy...oh and Ariel too.

Going by this well thought out first article, "Princess Profiles" could really turn out to be an incredibly interesting series. I like how you analyzed the time period this movie was originally released in and how the social and economical climate influenced Snow White's character and her tale. Even her short bob haircut was influenced by the flapper style.

I guess Snow White in many ways was supposed to be the Anti-Daisy Buchanan(of Great Gatsby). While Daisy represented the thrill and hedonism of the roaring 20's flapper era, Snow White represented a more responsible and grounded ideal needed for inspiring people to make it through the Great Depression which came after. Never thought of this aspect until now. Makes me respect Snow White and what she stood for a little more now. So thanks for your helpful insight, Alissa! :)

I enjoyed reading this article and thank you for your insight about the time period in which Snow White came out. It helps put things in perspective about historical events and social attitudes that influence the Disney heroines through the ages. If the fairy tale were re-done today by Disney I suspect Snow White would be given different mannerisms e.g. adapting with a campfire in the forest, spilling water on the prince by mistake, or show her with smudges of dirt on her face when she cleans. By today's expecations she's rather pristine in design.

But since this came out in the 30's I can see why the story would be about Snow White's physical journey rather than character development. She's forced out of her old life and has to fend for herself. But with hard work and optimism she finds a new home and family for herself. I see it as a fairy tale story about re-claiming security and happiness in a time when the future was uncertain and that's what appealed to people.

The jealous Queen is slowly consumed by her own pride until it physically manifests in her transformation into a hideous hag. In contrast, Snow White seems unaware of her beauty, doesn't show off or use it to manipulate people. I notice this with Belle who shrugs off when everyone gossips about her. A Disney princess will surely be aesthetically pleasing but a likeable personality rounds out a character too.

Last of all, the evil Queen's wardrobe and character design set the bar high for Disney baddies. Those flowing purple robes looked fabulous! We've been at it on Tumblr about how many Disney villains wear purple as a symbol of royalty and high status or authority to use powerful magic.

" Who knows what happened to the king. "

-Potential Spoilers!-

Per Fairest of All: A Tale of the Wicked Queen: "the novel written by Serena Valentino, based on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, that serves as a prequel to the film, telling the story of how The Queen became the villainous woman she was in the film. When her father died the young Queen married the King whom she met at the well by her father's house, however the King later died in a war against another kingdom. She grows to love Snow White, the King's daughter, as if she where her own. But when the King's three witch-like cousins come for a visit they give her the Magic Mirror of which the spirit was that of her dead father. It would serve as a corrupting influence on her throughout the novel. After her husband's death, the Queen slowly descends into madness. "
