My guess is that since the sequel will take place 10 or 15 years after the original the movie will be about Bob and Helen retiring and passing the torch to continue defending Metroville to Violet , Dash and Jack Jack I don't know how much time will pass between the first movie and the second one but we will have to wait 3 more years before Incredibles 2 finally hits theaters in summer 2019 on June 21st 2019 in 3D and IMAX 3D! And if I had to chose between an older version of Dash or a younger version of Dash I would choose younger because to me at least in terms of animation an 11 year old as a superhero beating up bad guys and getting away with it is just a lot more appealing and hilarious to me . But it's just my opinion I'm just happy the sequel is coming in 3 years and I can't wait to what the Parr family is up to next!

I feel like Edna Mode and Frozone would show a much bigger presence in either the prequel or the sequel which is after the children grow. Those are the ones I want to see the most, but the one I would be most excited about is the years after sequel. You know what would be cool? If they started off by defeating the Underminer, then went on a backstory a lot like Mr. Incredible's: the many posters, maybe a new app (depending on where the technology goes in this movie), and great victories (and maybe defeats). I'm not sure how they would look in the sequel, but I feel like it would very much be like Hiccup in How to Train Your Dragon: very grown-up, very sophisticated animation, and lots of awesome features, especially since they are getting older! I'm so excited ot see Jack-Jack grow up and be awesome!

Nice article. I've been hoping for a prequel of the "golden age" shown in the first few minutes of the movie, ever since the film's original release. I think it would be fascinating to see some of the other heroes in action with Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl on a grand scale. I'm also a sucker for prequels.

I'd be cool with a sequel as well (ideally we'd see both, but maybe I'm being too optimistic). Hadn't thought about a future story about the kids, though, which is a great idea.

I'm still really hoping that Brad Bird pursues at least one of the above scenarios. I guess animation is really expensive, which is a major hurdle, but Incredibles was so popular that I think it would be a viable proposition at the box office. I would certainly buy the Dvd's/Blu-Rays as well.

Plot ideas are one thing, heart is something completely different. And heart is something that Pixar prides itself on. The new ideas need to have some kind of moral backbone, saying something powerful about family or friendship.

So if they played off of the Underminer— Could the villain find out where they live and destroy the foundation of their home? How about undermining the family? They love each other and destroying what they had sought so hard to protect could make a very powerful story.

If they did a prequel idea— Could they play with Mr. Incredible's character by starting him out as a young adult who is mentored into maturity? A character arc which starts off with him insecure, moving through a time of over-confidence where he does the right thing for the wrong reasons, thus pushing him back into his insecurity, and then finally settling in for the final confident hero who does the right thing because it needs to get done— that might be an engaging (though well-trodden) path.

If they did something that focused more on the kids as they grow— What about focusing on the redemption of Dash? What if Dash's over-confidence gets him in the wrong crowd? What if he needs the rest of the family to come to bat for him, before he slips over the edge and becomes a villain? This might be an ideal vehicle to introduce a villainous mentor character. The antithesis to a Mr. Miyagi or Obi-Wan Kenobi character —something like Henri Ducard (Ra's al Guhl) in Batman Begins. The struggle of peer versus familial pressure, the intergenerational interactions, and the redemption of a character gone bad would all make powerful moral backdrops for action adventures.

The only Incredibles sequel I want is a story in the future starring the kids as adults. That way you don't get a rehash of any relationship problems between the three main adult characters from the first movie. New supersuits, new technology, and of course with the rise of superheroes after being in hiding comes the rise of super villians, the first of which was the Underminer. I really want to see some powerful new villains with cool superpowers. And of course, Edna. Can't have a sequel without her!

This may sound odd, but I think I'm the only person on the planet who wasn't begging for a sequel immediately after the first one came out. I never really even thought it ended on a cliffhanger. I always figured they had a battle with the Underminer, defeated him and sent him off to jail and made it back home in time to throw some leftovers together for dinner. Just another day in the life of the Parrs. No sequel needed to know what happened immediately after.

Great article, Stephen!

I put some thought into this a while ago. I'm woefully uncreative with original ideas, but I think it's a decent stab at, at least, what *I* would like to see from a sequel:

We see a montage of the kids growing up (similar to the start of Toy Story 3), and fighting crime alongside their parents, etc. As things go on, Dash (at age about 16 or so) starts to get very self-confident; Bob and Helen are older and even less in their prime, and Dash starts thinking he should be the main hero, so branches off on his own, Nightwing-style. In the process of doing this, he accidentally helps an old enemy of Mr. Incredible's with some evil scheme or another.

As I said, I'm not a story-creatin' person, and there's a lot of gaps, but that's the kinda thing I'd like to see. I don't think it can just pick up with The Underminer (I never read that as being a lead in to a sequel, just a call back to cartoon serials of the 60s/70s), and shifting Dash to being the main focus seems pretty logical to me. But lots of Frozone still, please.

In my opinion, the best choice is a sequel, because just like everyone missed Boo while enjoying Monsters University, everyone will miss the "Incredikids" in an Incredibles prequel (although we'd have more of Edna Mode, which is a positive aspect). In a sequel that has nothing whatsoever to do with the Underminer, just like Cars 2 had nothing to do with the McQueen winning the Piston Cup, the incredible family could face a threat that would challenge their love for one other and their unity. But the characters should be older: Violet could be in college, Dash could be in high school and Jack-Jack in elementary school, for example. Not a threat as global as Loki's army for instance, but it could definitely be a kind of threat that would affect Frozone and Edna as well.

Super fun article! I'd love a movie that takes place a few years after the original...Helen and Bob are older and are starting to think of retirement, which obviously is really hard for Bob. And his kids are struggling with finding balance in their lives because they've always been part of The Incredibles and they don't really have their own thing going. So it would be about Mr. Incredible passing the torch to his children, but the actual focus would be the kids finding themselves and their place in the world.

Also, EDNA MODE IS THERE IN EVERY SCENE. Boom! Best Picture Award guaranteed.
