I echo a lot of the commentors in two ways – 1) is the retirement really happening? I thought he said that after most of the films he made in the 2000s. 🙂 2) It is a sad day, if it’s really his last film (though From Up On Poppy Hill shows that Ghibli does have good hands in the boat still).

Oh, I don’t doubt that it’s critically acclaimed at all. It’s Miyazaki after all! I’m just shocked that Disney would dub this considering it’s not for kids. And that it’s just “boring” from all the fan reviewers. I’ll definitely try watching it for myself, but I have a lot of faith in the fan reviews. I guess we’ll have to wait and see!

It’s actually pretty critically acclaimed. Fans, on the other hand, are not as pleased. Not surprising, since this is Miyazaki’s first “not for kids” movie since Princess Mononoke and his first movie without any fantastical element at all.

In all honesty, I am glad that this movie is a little more serious. Ponyo, while inventive, like all of Miyazaki’s fare, did not impress me. I am looking forward to a movie rooted in history and it is obviously something Miyazaki is very passionate about.

Oh, and google some reviews of the movie from the Venice Film Festival. Critics there also seem to enjoy it.

Am I the only one who doesn’t like his and other Studio Ghibli movies? They are just too dark, even silly sometimes but not in the charming Disney way. And absolutely not magical. This is just my opinion. I know a lot of you LOVE him.

When I saw the news floating around the internet, I couldn’t help but giggle. He’s said this a few times before, so I find it hard to believe him. But maybe this time will be it! I’m a huge lover of his films, so whatever he decides, I’ll be happy.

I’m kind of shocked to hear Disney is actually going to dub The Wind Rises. I know it’s been a huge success in Japan (since well, it’s Miyazaki), but from all of the reviews I’ve listened to on podcasts, it’s tremendously boring unless you’re a plane lover or a pilot. They’ve all stated that the music and animation is beautiful of course, but it’s nothing like any of his magical past films. It’s a fictional biographical film about the designer for the fighter aircraft in WWII. So basically Miyazaki created this film for himself since he adores planes. I definitely feel like he deserves to give himself this film, but I’m still pretty shocked Disney is releasing it considering the reviews.

Hayao Miyazaki served the animation and film world well. And is part of the reason I’m taking animation in college now. He will be missed. Disney hurry up and release The Wind Rises!

And It will be interesting to see what direction Studio Ghibli will take.

Mark my words, Miyazaki will die with a pen in his hand.

This is his 4th time “retiring”. In all honesty, I am all for him and Takahata retiring. I really do want to see how Ghibli does without its two primary directors because, let’s face it, they won’t be around forever. Goro Miyazaki, Yonebayashi, and any other new directors that come to the studio need to know that they won’t have someone looking over their shoulders and correcting their mistakes. They need to be pushed. Also, Miyazaki and Takahata have made some of the best animated movies, or just movies in general, of all time. They deserve their rest.

On the other hand, NOOOOO MIYAZAKI ILL MISS YOU.

i learned how old he was several weeks ago. I kinda knew it was coming, but not so soon. We will miss you Miyazaki. :'(
