Very nicely thought through article. I actually am someone who follows animation directors to a certain degree (for example, I was pretty sad about Glen Keane not directing Tangled, but glad that he was still such a huge part of making it awesome), but I do think that Pixar has sort of nurtured the "cult of the director" to a different degree than the other major animation studios. Even though there are multiple directors on most of their projects (and it's often very hard to figure out who exactly did what when, even after multiple attempts to figure out timelines and such using behind-the-scenes interviews and commentaries), there's a sense that each film used to be a passion project of a director who gathered a crew of people who shared his (sadly never her) vision.

Now, I think it's great the studios are becoming more open about how collaborative animation (and filmmaking in general) is, but the whole "switching directors" thing is very confusing and troubling, given that as you say, Pixar has been turning out good, rather than great films.

But I echo Morgan's comment - another thoughtful and articulate piece! Thanks!

I think it's crazy that people blame Disney for Pixar's shortcomings when Pixar wouldn't have been where it is without Disney. Both studios are also led by the same person. These two companies are successes of the other

Great, reasoned argument, and great points about The Wizard of Oz and Gone with the Wind! Loved all the subtle Brad Bird references too. I genuinely love reading your articles; good show, sir!

Planes is not Pixar, it's from DisneyToon Studios. And Cars 3 is not in production. It would be really idiotic of Pixar to make a third one considering the last two were the lowest rated Pixar movies, especially the second. I hope Planes 2 and 3 get cancelled due to Planes' flop in the box office.
