I didn't write, "you don't understand the value of hand-drawn animation." I wrote: " I don't think you understand the way we old timers THINK about hand drawn animation."

There's a difference.

And I obviously listened to the episode. I never said you don't appreciate or LOVE the work. But there's an animosity toward CG that some animators have (even I get it sometimes) that you might not understand. It's irrational but it's there. THAT is what I was talking about.

The gutter scene was hand drawn, Mason. That was one of the early scenes animated in the movie. The first version of the movie I saw was older than the Re-cobbled Cut. I was in high school (1992) and it was already finished. So was 90% of the big machine at the end. My copy was a few years old. The most advance CG done in animation up 'til then was in "Aladdin" and THAT was revolutionary. There was no CG used in the making of "Thief". CG was just a novelty back then. It was just too clunky and unintuitive to use on anything other than machines like cogs and cars. In "Aladdin" it was like, "Look, it's almost like 2D!" It wasn't until "Toy Story" that animators said, "OH, you can actually animate well with computers?"

That big machine at the end was all hand drawn and it was far more complicated than the gutter scene. I don't think you understand the way we old timers think about hand drawn animation. Dick Williams would have thought it insulting to use a computer to do that scene.
