I'm with you. Everyone raves about this movie, and while it is very visually stunning and the animation is amazing, the story and characters really don't make any sense and are completely forgettable. And what's with the names?? Princess Yum Yum, Zig Zag, and Tack? Was that really the best they could do? Because of these major faults, I had no desire to see it more than once.

The story concept sounded interesting to me but the film fell flat in attempting to tell it. Just knowing this film came out around the same time as "Aladdin" didn't help since the
Disney film was able to successfully tell a fairy tale from beginning to end.

I don't think kids would've sat through the original version of TTatC because the thief and Tack, who take up a lot of the movie, don't talk at all. There's an expecation to have some fun comic lines from certain characters. And in the version where the thief’s inner monologue is nonstop (“I’m going to Disneyland!”) it can get tiresome. TTatC is a rough gem of unfinished animation but I agree with others that it's worth watching at least once just for the colors and character designs.

I am not new to this film at all, I discovered it many years ago when I was working on a big project for cinema class about animation. I think that although the story is very weak, the characters are not appealing or have any personality whatsoever, the animation, the design, the backgrounds and the whole visual splendor of the film is so incredible, that it is worth a view.
