I agree, it’s not just the A-list actors. In fact that’s what annoyed me about the “Epic” trailer because it was all about plumping the actors. I guess they do it because that’s the easiest way to get people in the seats. Will movie-goers always reviews of the movies? Maybe. Read about the plot? I hope so. But “oooh, I know that famous person!” will do it.

“Studios need to remember that it’s not a big name that draws in an audience, it’s a well crafted story with superb acting that will win the hearts of viewers.”

*Applause* I hope every animation studio reads this because you hit the nail on the head!

I loved the “same” voices in the golden/silver age ala Robin Hood. Sense of familiarity and comfortable consistency throughout a childhood of video tapes. To my mind, these stars were just the voices and not tabloid cover stars. Nowadays celebrities are already their own brand and often overshadow the character – nic cage in croods??!!!

I think this is one of the only times I’m okay with recurring voice talent; it’s best when we don’t know what they look like, or who they are specifically.

I have a problem with how major studios cast their voice actors today, they tend to go for big name live-action actors, rap stars, or just well known people instead of looking for people who are well suited for the part…don’t get me wrong, sometimes big name actors do animation voice overs well (Toy Story, Monster’s Inc., Tangled) but then there are the times where they just don’t get it entirely right (Croods, Epic).

Studios need to remember that it’s not a big name that draws in an audience, it’s a well crafted story with superb acting that will win the hearts of viewers.

I actually like recurring voice actors because it gives a big company like Disney a sense of consistency. I’d watch these films and think, “I know that voice from another
movie!” Phil Harris’ characters were a lot of fun.

“Robin Hood” has one of my favorite movie lines.

Lady Cluck: “Run for it, lassie! This is no place for a lady!” *Attacks two guards* “Take that you scoundrel!”
