This is a great review of the film! One of the best I have seen. I do think I like the movie more than you (It's my favorite movie of all time, mostly because of the deep emotional connection I have with it); I agree with almost all (if not all) of this. I wish the supporting characters were more 3-dimensional (though I do think Bunny was more this way than the others, since he learns to trust Jack more/be more forgiving. Though, admittedly, he has a lot more to learn in this respect). I also wish they hadn't made Jack quite so quick to dismiss Pitch. The end seemed a little over-the-top against Pitch. The characters would be sympathizing with Pitch and then they would be very much against him. Maybe if the audience had been made more for older kids the story would have been better, as it would not be as simple.

Anyway, I'll stop rambling now XD.

Hmm... Interesting. I think the reason why the supporting characters didn't have much of an arc in the film was because most of that happened in the book series "Guardians of Childhood" by William Joyce. A lot of the questions you asked were answered in the first three books. the book series is on-going. And, if I remember correctly, they're set 200 or 300 years before the movie.

And I agree that the filmmakers needed more time to flesh out the characters and their relationships with each other. But I think that's something Dreamworks would have wanted to explore if they were able to make sequels for the film. (Which doesn't seem possible at this point...)

Nicely articulated! I was wowed by the spectacle, but similarly found the character and story a bit flat - plus, Jack Frost's voice really distracted me, since it seemed really out of place with his appearance.

It's a big movie with all these larger-than-life characters leaping from one magical place to another. So I can see why the film had a sense of running amuck at times. They had a lot of good ideas crammed into just one movie--and that puts a strain on how much time you can spend on each character's development. It can be daunting to the audience. That's why I wish Dreamworks would do a spinoff series so we could get to know the Guardians better.

If it isn't on par with "How to Train Your Dragon" then I still think "Rise of the Guardians" is one of the better Dreamworks films. A rough diamond that needed some polishing but nevertheless, a good film.

Very good article! I absolutely agree on the supporting characters issue. While I enjoyed most of the supporting characters in ROTG, only Bunny I would say has an arc (trusting in Jack at end). I liked how you brought up The Incredibles because that movie has great supporting characters.

Also, I did think Pitch was a weak villain overall with great potential. Him and Jack are similar, but the writers don't touch on that as much as they should have.

Last thing I would add is that I didn't like the climax resolution that much because I kinda found it somewhat corny. I still don't really understand how the kids brought Sandman back to life, felt a little forced to me.
