Merida is different from all the other princesses. She’s the only princess that isn’t in a romantic relationship be the end of the movie. She’s the only young princess to be appalled at the thought of marriage so early. She doesn’t sing. She’s brave, strong, tough, talented, and realistic. She doesn’t have the permanent makeup(“naturally” red lips and cheeks, dark lashes, etc) look, and her hair is wild and unruly…unlike the prefect hair of many princesses. She is an anomaly and a beautiful example to young girls. Now I realize that with the different animation used for all the different princess some changes would have to be made so that they would all look similar. I just wish the dress would have stayed the same (no off-shoulder neckline), her face would have remained makeup-free, and her body had stayed strong and healthy, not super curvy. I’m not sure I like the new Merida…the old one is the one I loved to begin with.

I think in that list of Disney princesses, they’re missing one… What about Princess Kida from Atlantis? (That’s a Disney film from 2001) She is an actual princess and isn’t included, and yet Mulan who is a farm worker turned hero of China, is, though she has no royal lineage…

I agree with Gary that it was just a matter of time before Merida got glitter-ized. But I still think it’s pretty and nicely “tweaked” with the gold trims. They left her hair free to flow in the breeze and haven’t weighed her down with heavy jewellry either.

I especially like that gold brooch with tartan pinned onto her dress.
