And of course, you can’t really make a petition or try to contact Disney in order to change their minds, because they don’t listen to most general public feedback. This is so sad. I’m only 16 (almost 17) and born the year Toy Story came out, but I recognize the significance of 2D animation and grew up with it. What I don’t get is, Disney has and still does produce successful 2D animated TV shows and shorts (in a classic/neo-classic style, not to mention), but yet their new crop of movies can’t be in 2D? I know it’s cheaper, Flash is sometimes used and the quality’s considerably lower, but I still don’t get it… it’s idiotic. Forget being the president of the US for the day, what I wouldn’t give to be the CEO of Disney for a day…

Nik also was the supervising animator of Meeko FYI. Very sad to see this era end on such a sub-par film as Princess & the Frog. 🙁

This is upsetting. I love CGI animation, but I love 2D as well. They are both beautiful art forms. I was excited a few years ago to hear that Disney was putting out CGI and Hand Drawn films, but now I am disappointed. 2D animation is my childhood, and while Tangled still has that same Disney feel to it, It still isn’t a 2D film. I was looking forward to the new Paperman technology, because it was a middle ground, 2D artist can sketch, and CGI artist can use the technology. I wish the animators luck on finding work, and it upsets me that Disney has to let them go, because they were the only studio doing Hand Drawn films.
Hand Drawn films are what made Disney different, they even used Hand Drawn influences in Tangled, and that is what makes it so appealing. The fact that someone sketched over the frames in Tangled is amazing, so why get rid of it? Disney’s new CGI films will most likely start a new golden era, but unfortunately they are ending an old one.

shocked. the earlier news feed was general layoffs and i did not see this coming.

i am still clinging to the belief though that Disney will produce more 2D features at some stage. It may not be the once yearly BIG release we were used to during the renaissance but surely they gunna pop a surpirse stellar traiditionally drawn film on us every couple of years?!

i live in hope . . . .

It really is the end of an era. This is really different than a layoff story I heard that happened because of the failure of “Sleeping Beauty”. A lot of people got laid off from Disney and went to work at UPA or Hanna-Barbera. The fact is…the recent 2-D films, “Princess and the Frog” and “Winnie the Pooh”, didn’t recieve the success it hoped for because, what I think, is that they’re repeating themselves like studying the old classics and copying their own style which made those films look like it was made as a straight-to-DVD sequel…I quote that from A.O. Scott when he reviewed “Princess and the Frog”. If you want a 2-D animated film done right, it has to have two things: a great new story and a great new style.

This is truly sad news for the world of animation. Had it not been for these wonderful people’s work, we would never have had Tangled, Wreck-It Ralph or Frozen. Truly the end of an era.
