Like Blue Sky's "Rio" surrounded with parties and samba music? I could see Dreamworks trying to snap up the Bollywood idea before Disney does...but Disney usually does the animated musical flicks. Hmmm...why do I think the monkeys will remind me of the penguins from "Madagascar"?

I'm still waiting for a CGI or motion-stop animation film of Roald Dahl's "The Twits".

Great idea! A fairytale set in India sounds great! I want an Indian princess too (Obviously since I'm from India myself)! India is a land of fantasy and the potential for unique fairytales is endless. and let's not forget the music! I think Disney thinks that Jasmine counts as an "Indian" princess (even though she's Arabian). Anyway, "Aladdin" is the closest we have to an Indian fairytale. Haha.

And NO, I don't think it could be offensive in anyway. The Indian public LOVES The Jungle Book! :)

Unrelated: DreamWorks is working on an animated Bollywood-style musical set in Mumbai and possibly starring monkeys (unconfirmed).

Looking back at films like "Aladdins" and "Mulan", for a while I've wanted Disney to do a fairy tale-esq story set in India (with Bollywood numbers!) but would it be too much of a risk because it might be seen as offensive?

Thanks Esther! True, it's starting to get really annoying and it's easy to see that studios are doing this for a quick buck. I'm not against CGI-heavy movies, but I wish they could do something original. They have a host of talented writers and directors who can create good stories, but twisting beloved fairy tales just feels cheap and lame.

But then again, films like "The Odd Life of Timothy Green" don't perform as well as ones like "Oz", so that's why Disney is milking this fad as much as they can.

"Midnight Sun"..is that for real or are you pulling my leg? These days with movies coming out I can't tell.

I've also thought Hollywood has noticed the success of "Wonderland" and followed with lots of vamped-up fairy tales. ABC has "Once Upon a Time" on TV too. Most of them have been all style and no substance. Gal pals and I were very dissapointed with "Snow White and the Huntsman". I'm curious about "Malificent" since it sounds like "Wicked" but won't know until I see the trailer.

I'll admit I'm a fan of the Disney classics and the recent "Princess and the Frog" and "Tangled" films. But gotta agree with Gary Wright that lately Hollywood is trying too hard to make fairy tales overly sexy, overly dark, overly adult-flavored. And it's ironic because Disney has made films for decades that the entire family can enjoy.

Wright's got a good suggestion for Disney to try drawing new projects from other stories. Run out of Grimm and Perrault? There are thousands of myths, legends, and stories from around the world to choose from. Pocahontas and Mulan were real people too so I wouldn't rule out history either.

Del Toro's beauty and the beast and Sidney's beauty and the beast adaptations are different movies. Even though there are a lot of adaptation coming out, I'm still excited though!
If it weren't for he fact that Guillermo del Toro is directing, I would feel just as exasperated. But it's del Toro!! He is amazing, and he will surely ruin the story fro the Disney purists. But for those of us who crave a little darkness, he will inspire us and break the monotony of pink bubbly magic. =) I for one, have been looking forward to his.
