Actually, no, in this case "cult" stands for "culture." A movie that has a "cult following" means that they have a large group of fans outside of the mainstream who follow that designated part of culture. For instance: there are a lot of sci-fi films with cult followings...the same goes for exploitation, camp and anime. The Black Cauldron has a cult following for sure, but I would disagree with Nightmare Before Christmas on the sole fact that Hot Topic brought it into the mainstream.

And I have to disagree with the hosts of this podcast for saying that fans of Nightmare as well as Quentin Tarantino are just fans because "they think it's dark and it makes them cool." Tarantino is one of the most innovative filmmakers of all time. He, along with a few other writer/directors, changed independent film so drastically in the 90s. I mean there's a reason that Pulp Fiction was the first independent film to gross more than $200 million.

I went to see Nightmare Before Christmas in 1993, and everyone I was with had mixed reviews...some of us loved it and some of us didn't like it at all...but there was one thing they could all agree on. The music was extremely memorable. And why shouldn't it be? Danny Elfman was and still is a genius. We were singing Oogie Boogie's Song, What's This, Poor Jack and Kidnap the Sandy Claws for years. Heck, that soundtrack was the first CD I ever owned. Anyway, three years later, this is my response.

Great podcast! I saw this movie once a few years ago to see what the big deal of it was and I kinda agree with you all. I don't hate it, but it's not the best thing ever as some of the fanbase suggests it is.

You guys didn't like the music in this movie? The music was epic! The score was amazing as well. Danny Elfman was genius on this movie! I love this soundtrack and listen to it often. Maybe you should give the music another chance :-)
