Holy cowabunga! Two of pop culture’s most-popular crimefighting franchises are colliding together in one epic crossover! Warner Bros. Animation and DC have teamed up with Nickelodeon to bring the Caped Crusader and the Heroes in Half Shell together in a new direct-to-video animated feature titled Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Announced exclusively through Syfy, the ambitious crossover adapts from of the Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics by James Tynion IV and Freddie Williams II, released between 2015 and 2016. The film will see the Ninja Turtles teaming up with Batman, along with his companions Batgirl and Robin, to take on his dangerous rogues gallery of villains in Gotham City.
Although no writers or directors were announced, Syfy did reveal the extensive voice cast. Most notably, for the first time ever, Batman and the Joker will both be voiced by the same person. The actor assigned is Troy Baker, who had previously voiced a young Joker in the video game Batman: Arkham Origins.
Tara Strong is set to continue her dual voice role as both Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy, as she had done previously in Batman Ninja and three animated DC Super Hero Girls movies.
The rest of the voice cast consists of Darren Criss (2015’s Transformers: Robots in Disguise) as Raphael, Kyle Mooney (Saturday Night Live) as Michelangelo, Baron Vaughn (Right Now Kapow) as Donatello, Eric Bauza (Woody Woodpecker) as Leonardo, Rachel Bloom (The Angry Birds Movie 2) as Batgirl, Tom Kenny (SpongeBob SquarePants) as the Penguin, John DiMaggio (Adventure Time) as Mr. Freeze, Carlos Alazraqui (Rocko’s Modern Life) as Bane, and Cas Anvar (Halo 4) as Ra’s al Ghul.
Regarding Darren Criss, this will the second time he’ll be voicing Raphael. He previously voiced the red-masked turtle in Brandon Auman’s animated short Turtles Take Time (and Space), which Nickelodeon screened exclusively for San Diego Comic Con 2016.
Warner Home Entertainment plans to release Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on 4K, Blu-ray, and digital this late spring, though it was not stated if this would include a DVD release.
