The Angry Birds will launch onto the big screen once again on September 20, 2019 with The Angry Birds Movie 2, which features a recently announced, star-studded cast.

The Angry Birds Movie, which debuted in 2016, spotlighted main character Red, who was voiced by Jason Sudeikis. Josh Gad starred as Chuck, Danny McBride as Bomb, Peter Dinklage as Mighty Eagle, and Bill Hader as Leonard. All of these actors will reprise their roles in the video game-based sequel.

Several new names are joining the original lineup, including Disney Channel actress Dove Cameron, who recently starred on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Sterling K. Brown of This Is Us, Rachel Bloom of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Silicon Valley’s Zach Woods, Lil Rey Howery of The Carmichael Show and Get OutHow To Be a Latin Lover’s Eugenio Derbez, 7-year-old Brooklynn Prince of The Florida Project, and Awkwafina, who will star in the upcoming films Ocean’s 8 and Crazy Rich Asians. Saturday Night Live star Leslie Jones will provide the villain’s voice.

While the first film was directed by Clay Kaytis and Fergal Reilly, The Angry Birds Movie 2 will be directed by Thurop Van Orman and co-directed by John Rice.

Great, one of 2016’s worst animated excuses for family entertainment that’s only a few steps better than The Emoji Movie is getting a sequel…Pfft! >_<

I either didn’t realize or plain forgot that a sequel was happening. Anyway, I don’t think it’s going to do too well no matter how many stars they get. The first one was sort of old news when it came out, and by next year, Angry Birds will likely be even less relevant. The mediocre response to the first movie won’t help either.

  • Chelsea Warner

The first one was bad enough.

The first one was decent for what it was and had more effort put into it than asked for. It could have been worst. This one does have better talent involved than the first one in terms of directors. Both Thurop Van Orman and John Rice have some great shows that they’ve worked on in their profile, especially Van Orman. Maybe he can bring that same sense of absurdity that was found in Flapjack and insert that into the movie. Something as bizarre as Angry Birds could really use that Flapjack sense of humor and tone. The first one had that here and there but it didn’t fully commit to it.

  • Wow this cast looks really good! Like the first films! But the first one was super forgettable so….at least the cast looks good?

I have faith in Thurop Van Orman and John Rice. They’ve both worked on and created great shows that were surreal, funny, and very clever. While I thought Clay Kaytis and Fergal Reilly did a decent job with the first film, here’s hoping they can bring that same style into this film and help the franchise truly embrace the absurdity of it’s concept.

They tried so hard to extend the run-time of the first movie with filler from how little plot they got, what are they going to do next ? Angry Birds Go adaptation ?
I won’t be surprised if they actually did that, the cars were set up in the first movie anyway.

Sadly, just another movie that doesn’t need a sequel…

  • Rachel Wagner

Part of the problem with the first one was distracting celebrity voices so this doesn’t excite me. Also it had strange messaging and a weak script. Wish they were spending money on that…
