Disney Sparks Nostalgia with ‘Mary Poppins Returns’ Teaser

Emily Blunt in Mary Poppins Returns

It seems Disney has become a master at the art of the teaser trailer. As with last fall’s Incredibles 2 teaser, the recent Solo: A Star Wars Story, and now this week’s Mary Poppins Returns and Christopher Robin, the studio knows how to give us a taunting glimpse of the characters we know and love, and provide just enough to reassure us that the upcoming films will honor their predecessors.

The first teaser trailer for Mary Poppins Returns, revealed at the Oscars, follows that formula to a beautiful T. It opens with a once much-loved kite rustling throughout a dreary 1930s London landscape, accompanied by gentle background music that recalls an era of films long gone by. In this story, the child Michael Banks from the original Mary Poppins has grown up, and has three children of his own, Annabel, John, and George. The children chase after the kite and the trailer’s initially downtrodden tone quickly changes to one of excitement and possibility. The wind picks up and chimney sweep Jack (Lin-Manuel Miranda) helps the kids pull the struggling kite to the ground. Except they aren’t only greeted by the kite, but by Mary Poppins herself, who makes her grand reentry into the Banks family’s lives.

The trailer ends with Mary being reintroduced to the Banks, Michael (Ben Whishaw) and his sister Jane (Emily Mortimer). We’re left with a very Poppins-esque quip, expertly delivered by Emily Blunt in the titular role, and then it’s over.

Delivering a successful sequel is a challenge, especially when the original film was released decades ago, to a whole different generation. But despite over 50 years having passed since Mary Poppins first graced our screens, the teaser faithfully maintains the spirit of the beloved classic, and looks as though it will honor and not tarnish the name.

Amber

Amber is an imaginative storyteller and visual artist whose greatest ambition is to tell meaningful stories that resonate with people. Since she was young, Amber has enjoyed escaping to faraway worlds through animation, and has continued to follow animation into adulthood because of its limitless storytelling possibilities. Picking favorites is nearly impossible, but Amber would say her top animated films include The Little Mermaid, The Incredibles, The Emperor’s New Groove, and Frozen. She graduated with a B.A. in Interactive Media/Graphic Design and a minor in Journalism, and is currently working as an advertising designer. When she’s not at her day job, Amber can be found working on digital illustrations and photo edits, drafting a new fiction story, or crafting a new cosplay. Send her a tweet at @amber_ld.
