Disney has given us a new glimpse of this year’s upcoming ‘Wreck-It Ralph’ sequel, and by the looks of it, the internet may be too much for Ralph to handle.

The colourful concept artwork features Ralph looking positively overwhelmed as he attempts to make sense of the internet, while Vanellope appears excited to meet the Disney Princesses explore the wonders of the world wide web. Either way, these two are a long way off from Litwak’s Arcade.

Disney also released a new official synopsis for the film:

“Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2” leaves Litwak’s video arcade behind, venturing into the uncharted, expansive and thrilling world of the internet – which may or may not survive Ralph’s wrecking. Video game bad Ralph (voice of John C. Reilly) and fellow misfit Vanellope von Schweetz (voice of Sarah Silverman) must risk it all by traveling to the world wide web in search of a replacement part to save Vanellope’s video game, Sugar Rush. In way over their heads, Ralph and Vanellope rely on the citizens of the internet – the netizens – to help navigate their way, including a website entrepreneur named Yesss (voice of Taraji P. Henson), who is the head algorithm and the heart and soul of trend-making website “Buzztube.”

While the original Wreck-It Ralph was a love letter to old-school arcade video games, the sequel seems to be an all-out celebration of the world of the internet, memes included. Insiders have already confirmed the inclusion of all the Disney Princesses (voiced by all the surviving voice actresses), Star Wars characters including R2-D2 and C-3PO, and even Princess Leia, along with a host of cameos from Marvel characters like Iron Man and Gamora. Hopefully we’ll also meet Mario this time around. Directed by Rich Moore and Phil Johnston, Ralph Breaks The Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2 crashes into theatres on November 21, 2018.

As much as I would have liked to be excited for this sequel, I am really having a hard time with the concept. It just feels like its going to be a giant dated mess that’s trying way to hard to be cool. Hopefully I’m wrong though because Disney has been doing a pretty good job again with their movies for a while now

It just reeks of Blue Sky/Illumination sequel-itis. All that needs to happen is Ralph to start a family to complete the full thing. It’s just disappointing that they went this way considering all of the stuff they could have done. I want to trust in Rich Moore, but he’s kind of older. Not to mention you can’t make a good internet parody without getting real into the ironic, edgy, and disgusting parts about it. I doubt they’ll make jokes to good memes either. I just want a trailer already.

What does Rich Moore’s age have to do with anything? Also, while there are some ideas that the sequel could’ve done that could be more related to video games, we should at least appreciate that they are taking the film in a more wild direction. I mean if they were to do another sequel about video games, the only thing I think they could do would be Ralph and the gang entering more video game parody worlds. Even that would probably be not as fresh as it was in the original. At least the internet has a lot more possibilities to mind for creatively. Web surfing, websites, online pirating, virus, click bating, and even online gaming are many things the sequel could play around with. I really don’t think anyone on the project is going to treat this like an Illumination film because if there is any company that puts there best foot forward in terms of animation it’s Disney. The team they put on any film project always goes above and beyond for a good quality film.

He’s kind of too old to understand dank memes. I’m worried it’s going to be “hello fellow kids.” It needs to be ironic and stupid to work.

Either way I’m still skeptical. It just looks and feels stupid. Ralph was about video games and should have stayed that way. There were like a billion ideas they could have gone with and this is the one they chose. It’s lame but I’ll stay cautiously optimistic because the first one was so good.

          • Dave 52

Sorry, I am really failing to see how having the film focus on exploring the internet is lame compared to anything else they could have used. This is has just as much possibilities as any other concept they could have done. If you don’t like the concept that’s fine, but I don’t think you should discredit what could be done with it.

          • Dante Panora

I mean, why would a wreck-it ralph sequel require him to go to the internet anyway? It’s just hard to see how this setting would expand on the characters and arcs of the first movie.

Maybe I will like the new characters by the time we see a trailer! Despite we now know the true purpose story wise of the Disney princess cameos, I am still a bit cautious about this sequel. While we are at it, I won’t be too surprised if this Yess character is a surprise antagonist which by the way is getting tiring of a trope. I rather see Disney villainy done the old fashioned way where we know from the first trailer forward knew what to expect.

  • Really hoping so much that it does what Emoji Movie failed to do is build some actual character to the world!! And so far it looks certainly cute and lively!! :DDDD

    • Manuel Orozco

I didn’t even bother seeing the Emoji movie.

      • Don’t. It’s a waste of time, even for an ironic watch.

        • Manuel Orozco

I’ll take your word for it

  • Chelsea Warner

This looks like the Emoji movie done right.

  • Rich Moore said they left Mario out of the original movie because he felt that he should have a more significant role than a cameo in the sequel. I hope that has remained the case, but judging the internet-based plot, I’m not so sure anymore.

    • Manuel Orozco

If Mario doesn’t appear, I won’t be too disappointed. And I do mean not too much because it won’t ruin my enjoyment so easily.

      • That’s good. It’s just that the video game fan in me just wants to see Mario on the big screen. That said, it looks like Nintendo is in talks with Illumination to make a Mario film. So he technically doesn’t HAVE to be in Ralph 2.

        • Manuel Orozco

Well I’m not big into Mario growing up but I will do it for the sake of my fellow Illumination fans.

  • Dante Panora

This sounds like it’s ripping off the rip-off (That was Emoji Movie). The premise just sounds so shallow even disregarding the references to internet culture.

    • Dave 52

Even though this was in development longer than The Emoji Movie. What is it with people saying _____ is a rip off just because the premise is similar? Do people know how long it takes to make a movie and the process that goes behind it? There is no way two films with the same premise or idea can rip each other off so quickly.

  • Dan Siciliano

Hmm…I wonder what the result shall be even though I didn’t see the Emoji Movie, thank goodness. But I can’t wait for more Vanellope!

  • I feel mixed about this. Not sure if I am a fan of this concept, but I trust
the film makers (based on their record) will probably make a good film.

    • Manuel Orozco

I’m not familiar with internet gaming either. But I do trust the creators as well.

  • And of course we still don’t have a trailer.

    • Manuel Orozco

Maybe we won’t get it until June before Incredibles 2

  • AnimatedMadness

I still think there is a missed opportunity of a title here. Why wasn’t this just called “Ralph Wrecks the Internet?”

    • Manuel Orozco

I’m okay with the title like this

    • Harith Sami

      Wreck-the internet- Ralph

      • AnimatedMadness

        That’s pretty good too!

  • Harith Sami

The concept art makes this video more legit 😛

Are Sergeant Calhoun and Fix-It Felix not in this one? Pity, they’re so cute together.
