D23 Expo 2017: DuckTales Q&A Panel

D23 Expo 2017: DuckTales Q&A Panel

Arguably the most exciting project coming out of Disney this summer is the new reboot of DuckTales, which has an event opening August 12th followed by a series premiere in September. Many enjoyed the original series and comics as children and are now excited to watch a new take and introduce it to today’s children.

The DuckTales panel at D23 featured Francisco Angones (co-producer and story editor), Matt Youngberg (executive producer), Beck Bennett (voice of Launchpad McQuack), Kate Micucci (voice of Webby Vanderquack), Toks Olagundoye (voice of Mrs Betina Beakley) and Ben Schwartz (voice of Dewey Duck). We even got a brief video from David Tennant who will be voicing Scrooge McDuck.

One of the coolest things about the panel is they made it abundantly clear this new show is not a repeat of the original. They are bringing in that show, plus the comic book and video game to draw inspiration from. “Everything we are doing is trying to find that middle ground between new and old.”

Francisco said, “DuckTales is a public trust. They belong to everybody so we tried to treat them like a real relatable family.” For example Huey, Louie and Dewey have individual personalities that must learn to get along together. Webby is also going to be a pretty big character this a strong personality that “takes things to the extreme.” Of course, Launchpad is the reverse completely chill all the time.

There is even going to be a superhero duck called Gizmoduck, which will appear from time to time, voiced by Lin Manuel Miranda, who it turns out is a massive DuckTales fan! We will also see the return of Ludwig von Drake in a flashback from the 60s. He will be a “Q style weapon and gadget master.” And of course we will see plenty of Donald Duck!

The tone of the new series is going to be similar to the original with an action-adventure vibe. We got to see an animatic teaser of the season and it looks like it is going to be a blast. Young and old alike will have so much fun watching the series together.  Most importantly, the series is being made with love and an attention to small details fans will appreciate.

DuckTales will premiere on Disney XD on August 12, 2017.

Are you looking forward to the new season of DuckTales or are you nervous about it?  What excites you the most? Let us know in the comments below!
