Entertainment Weekly has revealed exclusive images from Disney’s highly anticipated Mary Poppins Returns. The film stars Emily Blunt as the iconic Mary Poppins and Lin-Manuel Miranda as Jack, a London lamplighter and friend to Mary Poppins. While the movie won’t hit theaters until Christmas 2018 (such a long way away!), these stills offer our first true look into the heart of the film.
I’M NOT CRYING, YOU’RE CRYING. This image is quintessential Mary Poppins. Left to right are Miranda as Jack, Pixie Davies as Annabel Banks, Joel Dawson as Georgie Banks, Nathanael Saleh as John Banks, and Blunt as Poppins. This is a scene from the song “Trip a Little Light Fantastic,” which, like all the film’s new songs, is composed by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray).
Concept art of Cherry Tree Lane, looking a bit more picturesque and sunnier than it did in the original 1964 film. In Mary Poppins Returns, adult Michael Banks lives in his childhood home with his three children and longtime family housemaid Ellen (Julie Walters, in what seems to be perfect casting). Also visible is the home of Admiral Boom, ship mast and all.
The story surrounds Mary Poppins arriving to the Banks household once again in lieu of a family crisis, this time involving grown-up Michael (Ben Whishaw) and Jane (Emily Mortimer). Michael’s wife has just passed, and it seems that the whole family is in need of a little magic.
The clan of lamp-lighters led by Jack, who was apprentice to Bert as a child.
