John Lasseter, Disney Princesses, and Olaf Headline D23 Expo 2017

D23 Expo 2017 is fast approaching. The celebration of all things Disney will include, of course, backstage peeks into Disney animation past, present, and future. Here’s what to expect from the main animation-focused panels and presentations, just announced by D23.

Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios: The Upcoming Films

  • Friday, July 14, 2:30 p.m., Hall D23
  • Hosted by John Lasseter
  • Footage from Coco
  • Footage from Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2
  • Surprise announcements
  • Musical performances
  • Voice talent appearances

Though not listed in the announcement, it’s likely that this presentation will also include goodies from The Incredibles 2Toy Story 4, and maybe even Frozen 2Gigantic is now delayed so far into the future (November 2020) that it will still be a year and a half away by the D23 Expo two years from now, so there probably will be minimal news surrounding it, but we can dream, can’t we? Hopefully we’ll also get an update on the status of DisneyToon Studios and perhaps a few announcements about some of those untitled films on both studios’ release calendars. (Though all of that is pure speculation.)

Moana-Still

The Power of the Princess

  • Saturday, July 15, 10:30 a.m., Stage 28
  • Hosted by Disney animators Amy Smeed and Kira Lehtomaki
  • Jodi Benson, voice of Ariel
  • Ming-Na Wen, voice of Mulan
  • Anika Noni Rose, voice of Tiana
  • Auli’i Cravalho, voice of Moana

We’ll forgive the fact that Moana herself insists she is not a princess only because of this incredible line-up.

Creating the Worlds in Pixar’s Universe

  • Saturday, July 15, 12:15 p.m., Stage 28
  • Featuring Pixar production designers and artists sharing about their films’ imaginative settings

Olaf’s Frozen Adventure: A Sneak Peek at the New Frozen Short Film

  • Saturday, July 15, 2:30 p.m., Stage 28
  • Pretty self-explanatory here. Sure to have lots of advance footage!

This project was initially announced to be a television special, though the language used by D23 implies it’s now a short film. It is unknown of it will still debut on television or instead release theatrically. Regardless, D23 reveals some new info about the project: it is produced by Roy Conli (TangledBig Hero 6) and it will include new songs. We’ve already known for a while that it is directed by Stevie Wermers-Skelton and Kevin Deters (the same duo behind Disney’s Prep & Landing holiday specials). The text curiously refrains from mentioning the Lopezes’ involvement, which may or may not mean the new songs are written by them.

The Evolution of Pixar’s Characters

  • Saturday, July 15, 6:00 p.m., Stage 28
  • “Legendary Pixar artists” share the creation of the studio’s beloved characters

Bambi-Signature-Collection-Bluray-Combo

Bambi‘s 75th Anniversary

  • Sunday, July 16, 11:30 a.m., Walt Disney Archives Stage
  • Stories from the voice cast
  • Look into the film’s hand-drawn artwork
  • Celebration of new Walt Disney Signature Collection release of the film

The D23 Expo is July 14-16, 2017, at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, CA. Tickets are available through D23.

What announcements do you hope will be made at this year’s D23 Expo?

  • If they come, I’m looking forward to teases for things like Toy Story 4 and Incredibles 2. And yes, what exactly is DisneyToon Studios working on? I’d like to know that too.

    • Manuel Orozco

I’m hoping DisneyToons is working on something original.

      • Either that, or something based on classic Disney. I feel that stuff like the Goofy Movies and “Mickey’s Once Upon A Christmas” are some of their best works.

        • Manuel Orozco

I don’t know if I’ll be up for it since I’m not big on Disney’s mascot team. But we will see what happens since we need to know what they got planned for 2019.

          • I just hope that whatever they’re making does well. 2019 is a crazy crowded year for animation.

          • Manuel Orozco

Tell me about it. With some goodbyes, homecomings and some possible hellos. I’m looking forward most to Toy Story 4 giving a welcome home to Woody and his gang.

          • My feelings for TS4 are mixed right now, but I’m hoping that what they show at D23 will ease my fears. TS3 felt like the perfect ending, so maybe TS4 will make for a nice epilogue.

          • Manuel Orozco

My thoughts exactly. As for goodbyes I mean How to Train Your Dragon 3.

          • Manuel Orozco

Speaking of mascot characters, are you excited for some Donald in the upcoming DuckTales reboot? It’s airing sometime in August

          • Don’t really have nostalgia for DuckTales like I do some other things (I watched the Lost Treasure movie when I was very young, but that’s it). I’m still gonna try it out though.

          • Manuel Orozco

Because I’m excited. I was skeptical at first but since I was born after the original show, what the hey?

        • Marielle

That would be such a great idea if they put DisneyToons in charge of bringing back the old characters! I did not grow up with them, but I loved the short they did in 2013 “Get a Horse!”, it was quite revolutionary in my opinion. I also loved the video game “Epic Mickey” that was a story about the old Mickey gang.

          • Manuel Orozco

Get A Horse was an entertaining opening act to Frozen.

          • I agree that Epic Mickey has a ton of potential. I never played the games, but I did watch the cutscenes online and buy the second title’s soundtrack. They feel like the type of Disney that I’ve been missing all these years: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XdcmJQsy784

    • That studio’s been dormant for a while now, right? And yes, I went to see teasers.

  • I’d like to know more about their non-sequel line up, although it seems unlikely. Looking forward to the news & early footage either way.

    • Fadi Antwan

*sigh* If they don’t announce new animated films, I’ll be sorely disappointed. That’s pretty much the only thing I’m looking forward to from the D23 Expo. They haven’t announced new original animated films since freaking 2013!

    • Same. Not opposed to sequels, but showing more original content would be nice.

      • Rachel Wagner

But there is a Untitled Disneytoons film on the schedule

  • Manuel Orozco

No particular possible announcement that I have in mind right now. I just would like to some teases on what is 100% set in stone to happen! Meanwhile with Olaf’s Frozen Adventure getting teased before Cars 3 next week and no confirmed air date in December, who knows what will end up happening in the end.

  • Marielle

I would love it if Pixar announced their next original projects. I don’t even need artwork, I just want to know what they will be about, sort of like what they did in 2015 when they revealed the teaser posters for all their films until 2019. That had six “coming soon” movies. If they do the same this year, they could mention Coco, Toy Story 4, Incredibles 2 and three more movies, bringing us up to 2021. One can dream 🙂

    • Manuel Orozco

As much as we want to see some orginality over the next decade, I still want to see an Inside Out 2.

    • Rachel Wagner

I would love that too. I want to hear about Pete Docter’s next film

  • Very excited to see what comes out of this D23!! Any concept art at the most would blow my mind :DDD

  • Yellow

At this point, I’m really looking forward to hearing about Ralph Breaks the Internet! It’s a shame it got pushed back a little but I hope they’ll still have a lot to share.

    • Manuel Orozco

Looking forward to as well. As well as Incredibles 2 and Toy Story 4

  • Harith Sami

Surprise Announcements, obviously Frozen 2, release date, let me guess, the empty Disney animated movie slate in November 26th 2019. I wonder if its anything’s 6th anniversary.

    • Manuel Orozco

It is already set for the date

      • Harith Sami

        Oh, didn’t know that. My theory was RIGHT !! . . . . . . . obviously.

        • Manuel Orozco

Believe me, I was expecting 2020 but still expect this to happen too.

          • Harith Sami

Initially, I thought it would be either released in 2016 or 2017, I thought that Disney would rush the production of the sequel, it seems that Disney had learned it’s lesson after the straight-to-DVD sequels.

          • Manuel Orozco

I wasn’t a big fan of the direct to DVD sequels growing up anyway. Not even TLK: Simba’s Pride, Little Mermaid: Return to the Sea or the Aladdin sequels. But the choice to release Wreck It Ralph 2 and Frozen 2 to theatres couldn’t have come at a better time.

          • Harith Sami

Worst case scenario is to Cars 2-ify or Minion-ify the sequel,
            Olaf’s Great Adventure: the theatrical movie ! 🤣 💲ka-ching💲
            . . . . Sven movie anyone. . . .
P.S. I hated the Lion King 2, too over-rated by fans, while the 3rd was funny and harmless enough, sadly fans hated it. 😔

          • Manuel Orozco

I’ll be okay with whatever happens as long as Anna and Elsa are given more screen time together.

          • Manuel Orozco

Actually you’re right Olaf’s Frozen Adventure is going to be in theatres. It’ll be a 21 minute short that wil play before Coco.

          • Harith Sami

21 minutes that is a TV special length . . . . . . I was wondering if people were going to buy tickets for Coco only for 6 min frozen short, the last time it was the live-action Cinderella which had a similar demographic to Frozen (princesses ‘n stuff), but coco is about celebrating the death. Hmm, U.S. movie goers don’t care about Día de Muertos in November. . . . . Lets add a 20min Christmas special in front of it. I have to say that is a clever marketing move from John Lasseter right there.

          • Manuel Orozco

            You have no idea

  • Harith Sami

No incredibles 2 footage. DISAPPOINTED 😕

    • Manuel Orozco

But you never know if it will actually show.

      • Harith Sami

you’re say’n it can a be part of the “surprise announcements” 🤓 am exited now.

        • Manuel Orozco

          That’s the spirit

  • I’m certainly most excited to see the new footage from Coco and Wreck-It Ralph 2.

  • Rachel Wagner

I can’t wait! I am going for first time and they all sound like good panels.

    • Phoenix Wright

You’re so lucky! I hope that I can go someday

    • Manuel Orozco

That’s awesome Rachel. Planning on taking your kids with you?

      • Rachel Wagner

Sadly I dont have any children but I will be with friends and I’m sure fellow rotoscopers!

        • Manuel Orozco

I thought you had kids because of your description or I made a mistake.

        • Manuel Orozco

My bad. I was just assuming
