Disney’s pulling a Beyoncé and dropping a surprise release.

While it may have been inevitable that Bambi would join the ranks of the Walt Disney Signature Collection, and perhaps even predicted that it would be the next volume in the series, it’s breaking the mold and coming much earlier than expected. Walt Disney Signature Collection: Bambi will release on Digital HD and Disney Movies Anywhere on May 23, followed by Blu-ray, DVD, and On-Demand on June 6.

Here’s the trailer:

New bonus features include:

  • THE BAMBI EFFECT – “Bambi” was full of innovations for its time. Let’s take a look at how those past innovations affected future Disney animated titles all the way up to today.
  • STUDIO STORIES: “BAMBI” – Recordings of Walt Disney. Listen in on intimate moments where he discusses the challenges, pitfalls and triumphs during the production of “Bambi.”
  • DELETED SCENE: BAMBI’S ICE AND SNOW – Bambi coaxes Thumper and his brothers and sisters to come play on the ice during the first snow.
  • DELETED SCENE: THE GRASSHOPPER – A grasshopper confronts Bambi and Thumper and finds himself in quite a predicament.
  • BAMBI FAWN FACTS – Think you know everything there is to know about Bambi and his forest companions? Well, it’s time to discover some fun real-life facts about the creatures that live in the forest he calls home.
  • CELEBRATING TYRUS WONG (DIGITAL EXCLUSIVE) – A heartfelt look at the man who played a key role in the success of “Bambi.” Much like Mary Blair and Eyvind Earle, Tyrus Wong had a unique signature style all to his own. The soft water-colored backgrounds and beautiful palettes in “Bambi” were inspired by Tyrus’ concept art paintings.

Extras from previous editions of Bambi that are also onboard include:

  • DELETED SCENES – Two Leaves, Bambi Stuck on a Reed, Winter Grass, Twitterpated
    • Story: Telling the Tale
    • Characters: Drawn to Nature
    • Actors: Giving Voice to Animals
    • Art Design: Impressions of the Forest
    • Music: Nature’s Symphony
    • History: Back to the Beginning
  • TRICK OF THE TRADE (excerpt)

The Walt Disney Signature Collection honors the greatest works of Walt Disney Animation Studios with elaborate home video releases, following in the footsteps of the Platinum Edition and Diamond Edition lines before it. Typically these releases come in the January/February and September/October timeframe. Bambi‘s May/June arrival could suggest a quicker succession for future installments.

The Walt Disney Signature Collection initially began in January 2016 with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and has since added Beauty and the BeastPinocchio, and now Bambi to its ranks. Aside from Beauty (perhaps timed to coincide with its live-action remake), we seem to be going in chronological order, but who knows if this is mere coincidence or intentional strategy?

Initially released in 1942, Bambi celebrates its 75th birthday this year, noted with the “Anniversary Edition” banner on its cover art.

I’m not a big fan of Disney magic made during World War II. So I’m not in the mood for witnessing the infamous mother death scene or the at times ominous music helped to tell this iconic story. Besides, It’s been 20 years since I owned Bambi on video. Although, I kinda was hoping for a pop version of Love Is A Song. But no one should sing it then Idina Menzel or Celine Dion.

  • As beautiful as the cover art is on this new Blu-Ray release along with the addition of a Oswald short and some new bonus features, I think I’ll stick with my original Platinum Edition of the movie that I’ve own for so many years. Besides that, it still my favorite release of any Disney movie ever.

Just out of curiosity do you mean the Platnium Edition from six years ago or the Special Edition from 2005?

      • The Platinum Edition was the one that came out back in 2005. The other rerelease in 2011 was the Diamond Edition.

        • Manuel Orozco

Okay then. I thought the Platnium Edition was called Special Edition

Meh… I may be getting this if only to not be incomplete with the Signature Collection releases. But still, I don’t much care for what Disney’s been throwing out there. Almost ALL of the Signature Edition films so far have been repackaged rereleases that’ve been on home video a hundred times. Hopefully Disney won’t be putting out yet more editions of Cinderella, Lady & The Tramp, and other movies without FIRST putting out some of the lesser-known stuff like the package features. But then again, Disney doesn’t understand the idea of a non-mainstream film being liked by lots of people and not rereleasing the same 25 films over and over and over again…

    • I’m still waiting for a updated release of both Make Mine Music and Melody Time. The Bumble Boogie segment of Melody Time is hands down my all time favorite moment of all of Disney animation and seeing it on Blu-Ray would make me a really happy.

      • Manuel Orozco

I like the Bumble Boogie too

I totally agree, and why have we not seen a Blu-Ray of 3 Caballeros and Saludos Amigos? Whats worse is the two you mentioned are not even in the vault and you cannot pick them up on Digital, and they are the only two titles you cant even search for on DMA.

  • Man haven’t seen this one in forever, may think of getting this but not sure but the additions they have in this look so good and something not to pass up 😀

  • aquapyro

Lion King is after this release i think.

    • Manuel Orozco

I did hear about that. Probably to spread awareness of the remake happening

  • I own the platinum edition, but sadly I’ve lost the movie disk. I still have the bonus features disk though, and the making of features are pretty nice. Always nice to look back on. But i guess now is as good as ever to upgrade. Really nice that they have the old bonus features on them ^w^

I absolutely love Bambi. Definitely going to pick this one up!
