Animation at San Diego Comic-Con 2016: What to Watch Out For!

Is it that time again? Yep, it’s that time again.

San Diego Comic-Con 2016 begins this week! While this four-day pop culture extravaganza may be geared towards the ultimate comic book fans (like myself), there is still plenty there for the animation fan to chew on.

Whether you are attending the convention in person or reading up on the mountain of news coverage at home, here’s a general rundown of panels and events that you don’t want to miss!

NOTE: This article will initially have only the major events listed (Hall H panels, screenings, general events, etc). The list will be updated on an hourly basis.

Hall H Panels

DREAMWORKS ANIMATION – Trolls

DWA is bringing their upcoming film Trolls to SDCC for a special presentation with directors Mike Mitchell and Walt Dohrn, voice actors Anna Kendrick, Justin Timberlake, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and producer Gina Shay. The panel will be moderated by Nerdist’s Chris Hardwick.

WARNER ANIMATION GROUP – The LEGO Batman Movie

As part of Warner Bros.’s massive Hall H presentation, director Chris McKay and actor Will Arnett will be in attendance to discuss and present footage from The LEGO Batman Movie.

General Events

DISNEY ANIMATION STUDIOS – Moana (Art of Story)

Directors Ron Clements and John Musker will lead a panel of Disney artists for a behind-the scenes look at the upcoming film Moana.

SONY PICTURES – Sausage Party (Filmmaker Discussion + Screening)

Directors Seth Rogen and Evan Sandberg will hold a panel discussion on Sausage Party. This will be followed by a pre-party/screening later on.

TV

Opening Night: Warner Bros. is holding their annual screening night of episodes for their TV shows (current and new). Teen Titans Go! and the new show Justice League Action are among the shows being screened.

ADULT SWIM – Robot Chicken

Co-creator and executive producer Matthew Senreich, executive producer/co-head writer Tom Root, executive producer/co-head writer Doug Goldstein, actor-writer Breckin Meyer, and writer-director Tom Sheppard are in attendance to discuss all things Robot Chicken, including the new season along with exclusive footage.

COMEDY CENTRAL – South Park

On this panel, the cast and crew of South Park will be commemorating the show’s 20th season by discussing the evolution of the series, engaging in a Q&A session, and showing an exclusive sneak peek at the new video game South Park: The Fractured but Whole.

ADULT SWIM  – Rick and Morty

Creator and executive producer Dan Harmon will bring the cast and crew of Rick and Morty to SDCC to show an exclusive sneak peek at footage from from season 3.
