New fantasy animation series Elena of Avalor is set to premiere on Disney Junior on July 22, 2016.
The show centers around 16-year-old, sword-wielding Princess Elena (voiced by Aimee Carrero) who must learn to rule the magical kingdom of Avalor. Her group of friends include her older cousin Chancellor Esteban and a new friend, Naomi, to give advice along the way. Elena also looks to her younger sister, Isabel, her friends Mateo and Gabe, and a trio of magical flying creatures called jaquins for guidance and support.
The series is a spin-off of Disney Junior’s previous preschool princess Sofia the First. This popular show became the number one preschool cable telecast of all time for children aged 2 to 5. Will Elena of Avalor share the same success?
Disney expressed that the show will “incorporate influences from diverse Latin and Hispanic cultures” with its architecture, music, tradition, and folklore. The series will also broadcast in 25 different languages around the world.
Each episode of Elena Of Avalor will feature original songs in an array of Latin musical styles including Mariachi, Latin Pop, Salsa, Banda, and Chilean Hip Hop. Walt Disney Records will release the song “My Time” from the pilot episode as a digital single on iTunes on June 24, with a six-track EP following later on July 22.
What do you think of Princess Elena? Do you think the series will be as successful as Sofia the First?
