The summer season has just begun! Typically, that means a few things. Students everywhere (including a few of our readers) are graduating this year. People everywhere (including some of our readers and even a few of our RotoWriters) are ready to brave the chaos of the coming travel season. But if you’re like me, than the start of summer can only mean one thing: the convention season will soon be in full force.

San Diego Comic-Con, Anime Expo, AnimeNEXT, E3, Stan Lee’s Comikaze Expo, and the list goes on and on. If any of our readers are planning on traveling this summer, I have a good bet that at least some of you are traveling to attend any of the dozens upon hundreds of conventions that happen every summer. Granted, options are limited if you are strictly an animation junkie (there’s Annecy 2016, but that’s another article for another time), but that’s doesn’t mean there aren’t any cool things happening at other conventions, especially at conventions that aren’t centered around comics or animation.

Take VidCon, for example. For the uninitiated, VidCon is the world’s largest convention centered solely around online video/New Media (mainly Youtube). The event has been held ever since 2010 and has been held in Anaheim, California, since 2012 (at the Anaheim Convention Center). The event runs this year from June 23 to June 25. Normally, if you are attending the convention, you are there to see your favorite Youtubers in the flesh. But luckily for the more animation-inclined, VidCon does have a treat for you (provided that you don’t have a searing hatred for all things Illumination Entertainment).

On June 24, Youtube content network Fullscreen is hosting an early screening of The Secret Life of Pets two whole weeks before the film’s wide release on July 8th!

For the readers who are attending, the screening will occur at 7:30 PM on the 3rd floor ballroom of the convention center in the lobby of Hall D. As a bonus, the event will include pre-movie entertainment previews from Fullscreen and a post-movie(?) live show with Youtuber Grace Helbig (Writing with Grace).

On a final note, VidCon won’t be the only place where you can catch the movie. Those attending Annecy 2016 will also get to catch a world premiere screening of The Secret Life of Pets on June 16th (again, more on that in another article).

What do you think? If you are going to VidCon, are you going to attend the screening?

About Brandon Smith

Brandon is your average nerd with a love for nerdy things (games, comics, anime/manga, etc.). He also loves reading and writing and plans to be an author someday. For now, he writes with passion and curiosity about the world of animation. He lives with his family in North Carolina and is currently attending college.
  • Oh that’s cool they’re doing that! I went to Vidcon in 2014, it was a lot of fun. But there wasn’t a lot there for animators specifically, which I remember commenting on the event’s survey. I remember Jeffery Katzenberg was there though, a sign that animation studios would soon see the advertising potential of teaming up with the youtube crowd. Even Angry Birds got Smosh to do some voices now. Wish I could go this year but I just can’t afford it right now.

Yeah. I know there will be a lot of people who would be absolutely offended at the thought of seeing an Illumination Entertainment film anywhere, but it is a bit neat seeing the animation industry reach out to a rarely-untapped crowd (and it might be good for business.

I rather just wait to see the movie on July 8th like everyone else probably will. I’m expecting the Secret Life of Pets to be enjoyable but not that great.

  • Andrew Alderson

AniMat would be so lucky If gets in the screening.

In That way, he would release the review the movie on the day of it’s release.
