DreamWorks Animation is going down under for its upcoming animated Larrikins, set for a release in 2018. An all-Australian voice cast for the film, featuring Hugh Jackman and Naomi Watts, was announced today alongside some story details and a new director.
Larrikins, which means maverick or rebel, tells the story of a desert-dwelling marsupial known as a bilby who lives under a rock his entire life until he is kicked out by his parents and told to get a life. According to Deadline he does so by going on a road trip with a band in the Australian Outback. The animated musical will feature rock ‘n’ roll tracks from composer and lyricist Tim Minchin, who is also co-directing the flick with Chris Miller.
Earlier it was announced that Margot Robbie had joined the film’s cast. Today it was announced that Hugh Jackman, Naomi Watts, Rose Byrne, Ben Mendelsohn, Jacki Weaver, Josh Lawson, Ewen Leslie, and Damon Herriman will be joining her to voice characters in the film.
Larrikins is set to open in theaters on February 16, 2018.
