One of the riskiest bets of 2016 for feature animation now has a trailer for grown-up eyeballs to feast on.
The first full trailer (red band, of course) for Sony Pictures’ R-rated animated film Sausage Party has arrived on the internet. This is just hours after the film bowed to critical acclaim at this year’s SXSW festival in Austin, Texas, where a work-in-progress version was screened to attending audiences. You can watch the trailer down below.
WARNING: the following trailer contains explicit content, including dialogue and imagery that may not be appropriate for all audiences. Viewer discretion is advised.
For those of you who might have been….taken by surprise with this trailer, that’s probably because the trailer itself cleverly utilizes (and then subverts) expectations. Indeed, the first half of the film will look and sound familiar to anyone who’s seen a trailer for an animated film, only to turn the other cheek with equal parts hilarity and shock factor.
Like I said up top, this is quite possibly the riskiest bet out of all of feature animation for 2016. To call R-rated animated film a rarity is putting it lightly. A successful R-rated animated film is even more so.
But hey, if Deadpool can do it…
Sausage Party is directed by Greg Tiernan and Conrad Vernon from a screenplay by Evan Goldberg, Kyle Hunter, Seth Rogen, and Ariel Shaffir (based on a story by Goldberg and Rogen). The cast stars Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Jonah Hill, Bill Hader, Michael Cera, James Franco, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, Paul Rudd, David Krumholtz, Nick Kroll, Edward Norton, Selma Hayak, and Anders Holm.
Sausage Party slides into theaters on August 12.
What do you think? Are you looking forward to Sausage Party?
