According to ComingSoon, a sequel to the 2007 Sony Pictures Animation film, Surf’s Up, has been announced. For those who haven’t seen the film, Surf’s Up was a sort of mockumentary-styled film about the Penguin World Surfing Championship and one penguin surfer in particular, Cody Maverick (voiced by Shia LaBeouf).
Surf’s Up 2: WaveMania will further tell the story of Cody Maverick, this time going on a journey with an “infamous big wave riding crew known as The Hang 5” to a legendary surf spot known as The Trenches. The interesting thing about this movie is that the members of the Hang 5 are all voiced by WWE Superstars: John Cena, The Undertaker, Triple H, WWE Diva Paige, and Mr. MacMahon.
The film will be a joint production between Sony Pictures Animation and WWE Studios. This will be the third animated film that WWE Studios has had any involvement with after Scooby-Doo!, WrestleMania Mystery, and The Flintstones & WWE: Stone Age Smackdown.
Planned for a 2017 home video release to coincide with the original film’s 10th anniversary, Surf’s Up 2: WaveMania will be directed by first-time director, Henry Yu. The film will be produced by Michelle Wong and written by Abdul Williams. There is no info yet as to whether Shia LaBeouf will reprise his role as Cody or whether any of the other voice actors from the first film will come back for this sequel.
