Most of us were very disappointed when Pixar announced that over the next 3 years out of the 5 upcoming animated films that the studio is putting out, only one would be an original film, Lee Unkrich’ Coco, while the other 4 will be sequels to previously released Pixar films. Pixar President Jim Morris revealed in a new interview with Time Out, however, that Pixar is still working on some original feature films, and we even got the names of some of the directors who are currently working on these films.
Pete Docter, who has previously directed Monster Inc., UP, and last year’s Inside Out for the studio, is supposedly once again teaming up with producer Jonas Rivera on an original feature. Jim Morris revealed in the interview when asked about an Inside Out sequel that Pete and Jonas are currently working on a new, original and equally weird concept, and last month Pete even revealed to THR that he had a pitch for the film later that week.
Morris continues to reveal that Dan Scanlon, who directed 2013’s Monsters University, is currently also developing an original film at the studio. Further details about that film remain unrevealed.
Mark Andrews, who last minute took over as a director on Brave in 2012, is also working on his own original film. Back in 2012, it was revealed that he was working on an original sci-fi animated film. In 2013, he also announced he was writing and directing his own film at the studio. If this is the film he’s currently still working on or if it’s something completely different, it was not revealed.
Finally, Morris said that Brian Phee, who is a completely newcomer, is also directing his own, original animated film at the studio. Phee, is according to Pixar Post, a veteran story artist at the studio, so it seems very fitting for him to work on his own film after working in story all these years.
When these films will be released is currently unknown as we only have two spots in Pixar’s upcoming slate of films that don’t have a film attached to them, March 13, 2020 and June 19, 2020. The other films are most likely going to be released in the following years.
What do you think of this news? Are you excited to hear that Pixar is working on some original films with new(er) directors?
